I made up my mind and decided to post a well performing team each Tuesday while showing off my own team each Friday (starting next week). Today, I am featuring the Top 16 Champions Arena team from @_PRPRnoAB_ who used the only interesting team in Top Cut. It features Tinkaton 😳
The Team: https://t.co/qQ9aTwbY80
Floette:
The team is clearly built around Floette with the support of three different Fake Out users. It is very interesting however to see neither Sinistcha or Draining Kiss on the set which means that you have no way to recover any damage dealt on your Floette. On the bright side, you are an offensive threat too with Modest Moonblast dealing huge damage without any boosts. The original has Flower Veil but I recommend running Symbiosis because of Trace interactions. You don't have a Grass Type here, so Flower Veil is quite useless. As for the spread, I decided to run tons of bulk to make up for no recovery on this Floette. Another approach would be to go very fast and offensive and use Calm Mind just as a secondary option but this felt better to me. Enough speed to outspeed Adamant Basculegion & Modest Blastoise is a given and some Special Attack (first jump point to be precise) is nice to get knockouts such as +1 Moonblast against Kingambit (+1 5+ SpA Fairy Aura Mega Floette Moonblast vs. 32 HP / 0 SpD Kingambit: 201-237 (97.1 - 114.4%) -- 81.25% chance to OHKO) or Dazzling Gleam into Garchomp after Life Orb (5+ SpA Fairy Aura Mega Floette Dazzling Gleam vs. 2 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 168-200 (90.8 - 108.1%) -- 50% chance to OHKO). The bulk is great cause it's a huge momentum swing to survive Iron Head from Kingambit (32+ Atk Kingambit Iron Head vs. 26 HP / 26 Def Mega Floette: 140-168 (80 - 96%) -- guaranteed 2HKO). Even though Basculegion is intimidated most of the time anyways, I still wanted to highlight this calc as well (32+ Atk Mystic Water Adaptability Basculegion Wave Crash vs. 26 HP / 26 Def Mega Floette: 146-174 (83.4 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO).
Tinkaton:
In a meta full of Farigiraf, Tinkaton is an amazing anti meta pick. Being able to click Fake Out while Armor Tail is active thanks to Mold Breaker is a big deal. Gigaton Hammer is also a very strong move into Sylveon & Floette and Brick Break helps against screens and damages Kingambit quite hard. I am not quite sure what Play Rough is for, other than taking advantage or Fairy Aura. I think you only click it if Gigaton Hammer cannot be used. Leftovers gives Tinkaton some nice recovery. I usually prefer Shuca / Occa Berry to take some key hits but Leftovers are better into Sylveon, Aerodactyl, Farigiraf, Sylveon and Floette to name a few. Adamant Nature is very cool cause combined with 15 attack you always knockout Focus Sash Kingambit with Dazzling Gleam + Brick Break (15+ Atk Tinkaton Brick Break vs. 2 HP / 0 Def Kingambit: 100-120 (56.4 - 67.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO). You also put Focus Sash Sneasler into range of Fake Out / Feint after Gigaton Hammer which is also a big deal (15+ Atk Tinkaton Gigaton Hammer vs. 0 HP / 2 Def Sneasler: 133-157 (85.8 - 101.2%) -- 6.25% chance to OHKO). I put a lot of points into defense cause I figured it's important to take a Flare Blitz from Incineroar (0 Atk Incineroar Flare Blitz vs. 32 HP / 19 Def Tinkaton: 158-188 (82.2 - 97.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO) or Earthquake from Life Orb Garchomp most of the time (32 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Earthquake vs. 32 HP / 19 Def Tinkaton: 174-205 (90.6 - 106.7%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO).
Sneasler:
Poison Touch Focus Sash Sneasler is an amazing fit for a setup team like this one. It threatens Kingambit and is really good into opposing Balance or rain teams. Feint is a very interesting move. It pairs nicely with Choice Scarf Basculegion cause it limits defensive play. It also breaks Wide Guard which is good for Floette and breaking Quick Guard is huge for Kingambit as well. Having both Fake Out & Feint on a set is quite toxic cause you force tough mindgames for your opponent. The debate between Poison Jab & Dire Claw is very interesting. On this more offensive paced team, I like Dire Claw sleep & para odds a little more so it's the right choice. On teams with Sinistcha and more slow play, I believe Poison Jab is better but in the end it's preference. It's 31% Poison 10% Para 10% Sleep vs 51% Poison, so you have to choose for yourself which one you prefer. The spread is just a standard Jolly spread, nothing much to say here.
Basculegion:
How to make a team better? Just add the fish. With Choice Scarf, it provides a fast Pokémon which is quite important, especially with such a slow Floette. It also pairs well with Floette cause it deals with Fire Types while Floette deals with most Dark types. The moveset is the best one available. The EVs are interesting however. As you can see, I am not running max speed investment. I just wanted to outspeed the stuff creeping on Kingambit in Tailwind (103 -> 206) as well as Mega-Delphox, Mega-Lopunny & Mega-Manectric (204/205). I felt like there is nothing inbetween. Opting for a speedtie is also not my playstyle and I think that Choice Scarf Basculegion is not a crazy threat with Kingambit, Incineroar and bulky Floette on the team. I did want have some bulk but not cut too much attack cause you still want to get the knockout on TankZard for example with a 200 BP Last Respects (24 Atk Adaptability Basculegion Last Respects (200 BP) vs. 32 HP / 32 Def Mega Charizard Y: 180-214 (97.2 - 115.6%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO). The obvious survival with the bulk is Sucker Punch from Kingambit (32+ Atk Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 4 HP / 10 Def Basculegion: 170-204 (85.4 - 102.5%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO). While 14 Defense guarantees it, the 4 HP increase the chances of many moves such as Solar Beam from Timid Charizard or Moonblast from Modest Floette (32+ SpA Fairy Aura Mega Floette Moonblast vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Basculegion: 169-201 (84.9 - 101%) -- 6.25% chance to OHKO).
Kingambit:
The second setup Pokémon is Swords Dance Kingambit. This one has a twist however. It is running Life Orb over Black Glasses. It looks weird at first cause running Life Orb on a slow bulky Pokémon does not seem intuitive. You have to keep in mind that there are a lot of damage rolls based on this calc. Increasing those can win games right off the bat. Garchomp is a Pokémon that takes a +2 Black Glasses Sucker Punch most of the time but the roll with Life Orb changes (+2 32+ Atk Life Orb Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 2 HP / 0 Def Garchomp: 183-216 (98.9 - 116.7%) -- 93.75% chance to OHKO). OHKOing TankZard after Fake Out chip (or if they run a little less bulk) is also incredible (+2 32+ Atk Life Orb Kingambit Sucker Punch vs. 32 HP / 32 Def Mega Charizard Y: 164-192 (88.6 - 103.7%) -- 31.25% chance to OHKO). There are a few more but I wanted to show that Life Orb is not a troll item on Kingambit mainly. This is also why I decided to go quite fast on this set especially. Outspeeding Incineroar is very nice, being faster in the mirror can also help quite a bit. I also liked clicking Kowtow Cleave into Farigiraf before it Twin Beams my Sneasler. If they set Trick Room for you, you benefit from it just as much. We still have enough bulk to survive Flare Blitz from Incineroar + 2x Life Orb (0 Atk Incineroar Flare Blitz vs. 20 HP / 0 Def Kingambit: 132-156 (67.6 - 80%) -- guaranteed 2HKO). Modest Floette also does not have a good chance to grab the KO after Life Orb (32+ SpA Fairy Aura Mega Floette Moonblast vs. 20 HP / 2 SpD Kingambit: 151-178 (77.4 - 91.2%) -- 6.25% chance to OHKO).
Incineroar:
The Pokémon that changed setup balance forever. With Fake Out, Intimidate and Parting Shot it's an incredible partner for Floette & Kingambit. The moveset is quite standard but I will elaborate on Darkest Lariat here. Ceruledge can be quite a big pain. Darkest Lariat at least ignores defense boosts and the extra damage into stuff like Delphox or Basculegion is also appreciated. It's not as important to block Parting Shot from opposing Incineroar or moves from Kommo-o (dead Pokémon lol). 83 speed outspeeds all the Incineroar that are just one point faster than Sassy / Relaxed Sinistcha. Being faster is bad cause you would Parting Shot before opposing Incineroar but having a faster Fake Out is good and if the opponent is running Throat Chop, it is for sure better to be faster. There is also an extra layer to this speed stat. If your Intimidate activates before the opposing Incineroar's, you know that Kingambit is faster as well. That makes game planning a lot easier. The special defense invest is for Light of Ruin (32+ SpA Fairy Aura Mega Floette Light of Ruin vs. 32 HP / 16+ SpD Incineroar: 172-204 (85.1 - 100.9%) -- 6.25% chance to OHKO) and Weather Ball from Sitrus Berry Pelipper (5+ SpA Pelipper Weather Ball (100 BP Water) vs. 32 HP / 16+ SpD Incineroar in Rain: 168-198 (83.1 - 98%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery). The defense is for Garchomp (-1 32 Atk Life Orb Garchomp Earthquake vs. 32 HP / 15 Def Incineroar: 109-127 (53.9 - 62.8%) -- 2.73% chance to 2HKO after Sitrus Berry recovery) and some Sneasler (0+ Atk Sneasler Close Combat vs. 32 HP / 15 Def Incineroar: 180-212 (89.1 - 104.9%) -- 31.25% chance to OHKO). You also survive Weather Ball from Charizard into Earthquake from Life Orb -1 Garchomp.
Matchups:
vs ZardY Standard - I usually play these matchups around Floette. Life Orb Kingambit is a huge threat to your opponent as well. Definitely bring Incineroar & Sneasler to this. Feint is also a great move here cause it goes before Encore and can pick up Sash Whimsicott before it sets up Tailwind too. Tinkaton seems tempting against the Fairy types but I don't recommend bringing it, ever.
vs Sylv MAero - Do we actually have a name for this team? This is a great matchup for Tinkaton. Use your Floette, paired with Incineroar and Tinkaton. As 4th, you could bring all. Sneasler is best into Floette while Kingambit helps stalling / abusing Trick Room better. Basculegion gives you some wiggle room into Garchomp. This is why I think all can work here.
vs Setup Balance - This is a tricky matchup. You have to get a lot of calls right. Floette is decent into Blastoise but not great into Delphox. You need to bring Basculegion to pressure Delphox and have a Pokémon immune to Fake Out. You can play mindgames with Sneasler as well. If you lead Sneasler, you can also opt for a speed tie to play the matchup but it's very volatile nonetheless.
Conclusion:
A unique approach to a Calm Mind Floette team with Triple Fake Out. I don't think this team will define the metagame but it has some very good tools into the common teams (such as Tinkaton for the [insert the name for MAero MZardY here] team). Looking at his run, it's one of two teams he lost against, so it's not an easy matchup still. I think Fake Out + Feint on Sneasler is toxic and reminds me of Smeargle 😭 You should still try out the team and get a feeling for it yourself!
