You don’t get to describe the costs built into Britain’s electricity system as mysterious new “hidden costs” invented by Labour.

Under the Conservatives, Ofgem’s price cap already included network costs, policy costs, operating costs and an EBIT allowance for supplier profits.

In 2023, under a Conservative government, Ofgem actually increased the EBIT allowance from 1.9% to around 2.4%.

You can disagree with the system your government presided over. You can even argue it should now be dismantled.

But pretending Labour invented it requires a fairly spectacular case of political memory loss.
