Theme: The Certainty of Resurrection and the Power of Allah

وَيَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَانُ أَإِذَا مَا مِتُّ لَسَوْفَ أُخْرَجُ حَيًّا ۝ أَوَلَا يَذْكُرُ ٱلْإِنسَانُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُ مِن قَبْلُ وَلَمْ يَكُ شَيْئًا ۝ فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْ وَٱلشَّيَاطِينَ ثُمَّ لَنُحْضِرَنَّهُمْ حَوْلَ جَهَنَّمَ جِثِيًّا

“And man says, ‘When I have died, shall I really be brought forth alive?’ Does man not remember that We created him before, when he was nothing? So, by your Lord, We will surely gather them together with the devils, then We will surely bring them around Hell on their knees.”

Five Lessons

1. Resurrection is not more difficult than the first creation.
The person who doubts life after death is invited to consider his own beginning. There was a time when he did not exist at all, yet Allah brought him into existence. The One who created from nothing is certainly able to restore His creation after death.

2. Remembering our origin destroys human arrogance.
Allah asks: “Does man not remember?” Human beings easily become proud of wealth, knowledge, status, strength and achievements, forgetting that they once were nothing. Remembering our origin teaches humility and dependence upon Allah.

3. The resurrection is an absolute certainty, not a possibility.
Allah declares, “By your Lord, We will surely gather them.” The emphatic language leaves no room for doubt. Death is not annihilation; it is a transition. Every human being will eventually stand before Allah for judgement.

4. Our associations in this world have consequences in the Hereafter.
The mention of people being gathered together with the devils is a frightening warning. Whoever allows Shayṭān to become his guide through disbelief, rebellion and persistent disobedience risks being gathered with him. We must therefore be careful about whom and what we follow.

5. The image of people surrounding Jahannam on their knees should awaken us before it is too late.
The powerful expression jithiyyan depicts people brought to their knees in fear, helplessness and humiliation. The person who walks proudly upon the earth today will one day stand—or kneel—before the absolute authority of Allah. The intelligent response is therefore not merely to believe in the Hereafter, but to prepare for it through faith, repentance, righteousness and obedience to Allah.

O Allah, strengthen our certainty in the Resurrection and the Last Day. Keep the reality of death and our return to You alive in our hearts. Protect us from the whispers and pathways of Shayṭān, forgive our sins, accept our repentance, and make our deeds righteous. Gather us on the Day of Resurrection among Your believing and righteous servants, shade us beneath Your mercy, save us from Jahannam, and admit us into al-Firdaws in the company of the Prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous. Āmīn.

Theme: Nothing Is Difficult for Allah

قَالَ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ هُوَ عَلَيَّ هَيِّنٌۖ وَلِنَجْعَلَهُۥٓ ءَايَةً لِّلنَّاسِ وَرَحْمَةً مِّنَّاۚ وَكَانَ أَمْرًا مَّقْضِيًّا

“He said, ‘So it will be. Your Lord says, “It is easy for Me. And We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter already decreed.”

LESSONS:
1. Nothing is impossible for Allah.
Maryam was astonished at how she could have a child when no man had touched her. Allah’s answer redirects human thought from the apparent impossibility of the situation to the absolute perfection of His power. What appears impossible according to the ordinary laws of creation remains completely easy for the Creator of those laws.

2. Allah is not restricted by the means through which things normally occur.
Human beings naturally expect causes to produce effects: marriage precedes childbirth, effort precedes achievement, and medicine precedes recovery. Yet Allah is the Creator of both causes and effects. He may accomplish His will through familiar means or independently of them. The believer therefore uses lawful means while placing ultimate reliance upon Allah.

3. Prophet ʿĪsā عليه السلام was an extraordinary sign of Allah, not evidence of divinity.
Allah explicitly describes the miraculous birth of ʿĪsā as an āyah, a sign for humanity. His birth without a father demonstrates Allah’s creative power. The miracle points towards the greatness of the Creator rather than making the created servant divine.

4. Allah sends mercy in ways that human beings may not initially understand.
Allah describes ʿĪsā عليه السلام as “a mercy from Us.” Yet his conception initially brought Maryam anxiety, isolation and a tremendous trial. This teaches us that something which begins with uncertainty or hardship may eventually reveal itself as an immense mercy. We should therefore never judge Allah’s decree merely by its difficult beginning.

5. What Allah has decreed will certainly come to pass.
The words “and it is a matter already decreed”, teach profound submission to Divine Decree. Once Allah wills a matter, no obstacle can frustrate it. Our responsibility is to trust Him, obey Him, employ the appropriate means and recognise that the final outcome belongs entirely to Him.

O Allah, strengthen our certainty in Your unlimited power. When circumstances appear impossible, remind our hearts that nothing is difficult for You. Grant us the wisdom to employ the lawful means available to us while relying completely upon You. Make Your decrees concerning us sources of mercy and goodness, strengthen us to remain patient when we do not immediately understand Your wisdom, and grant us complete contentment with whatever You have destined for us.

O Allah, as You made ʿĪsā عليه السلام a sign and a mercy, make our lives instruments of goodness, guidance and mercy to others. Āmīn.

Theme: The Qurʾān - the Word of Allah and an Inexhaustible Compendium of Knowledge and Wisdom

قُل لَّوْ كَانَ ٱلْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِّكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّي لَنَفِدَ ٱلْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ أَن تَنفَدَ كَلِمَاتُ رَبِّي وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِۦ مَدَدًا

“Say, ‘If the sea were ink for writing the Words of my Lord, the sea would surely be exhausted before the Words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement.’”

LESSONS:
1. The knowledge of Allah is limitless: Human knowledge, however vast it may appear, remains finite. Every discovery we make, every mystery we solve and every field of knowledge we develop represents only a tiny portion of what Allah knows. The oceans themselves, immense beyond ordinary human imagination, would be insufficient as ink to record the boundless knowledge, wisdom, decrees and words of Allah.

2. The verse teaches intellectual humility: Knowledge should make us humble, not arrogant. The more human beings discover about the universe, life, the human body, the oceans and the heavens, the more we should recognise how much remains unknown. No scholar, scientist or intellectual reaches a point where there is nothing more to learn. Before the infinite knowledge of Allah, every human being remains a student.

3. Allah's creation continually reveals His greatness: The sea in this verse is not merely a metaphor of quantity; it invites contemplation. Consider its enormous volume, depth and expanse. Then imagine all of it transformed into ink, and another sea of equal magnitude added to it. Allah declares that all of it would be exhausted while His Words remained inexhaustible. Creation therefore points beyond itself to the immeasurable greatness of its Creator.

4. Our inability to understand everything should strengthen our trust in Allah: There will always be events whose wisdom we cannot immediately comprehend. This is particularly meaningful at the end of Surah Al-Kahf, after the story of Mūsā and al-Khiḍr demonstrated the limitations of human perception. What appears confusing to us may rest upon a wisdom known perfectly to Allah. Faith teaches us to seek understanding while recognising that our knowledge has boundaries.

5. A believer should never stop seeking beneficial knowledge: Since the treasures of Allah's knowledge are inexhaustible, learning should be a lifelong journey. Every verse studied, every beneficial book read, every sincere question asked and every truth discovered should increase our awareness of how much more there is to know. True knowledge ultimately leads the believer not merely to information, but to awe, humility, gratitude and greater submission to Allah.

O Allah, the All-Knowing, whose Words can never be exhausted and whose knowledge encompasses all things, grant us beneficial knowledge, sincere understanding and humble hearts. Teach us what benefits us, benefit us through what You teach us, and increase us in knowledge and wisdom. Protect us from the arrogance of knowledge and the ignorance of thinking that we know what we do not know. Make every knowledge we acquire a means of recognising Your greatness, strengthening our faith and drawing nearer to You. Āmīn.
