The 75-year-old California vineyard owner had reportedly paid around $40,000 to stalk a Yellow-Backed Duiker, a shy forest antelope, through Gabon’s Lope-Okanda rainforest. But the animals he ran into weren’t the ones he’d come for.

Dosio wasn’t new to trophy hunting. He’d hunted Lions, Rhinos, Hippos, Crocodiles, and Elephants across Africa and the US, and his California home reportedly held dozens of mounted heads from decades of paid hunts.

This trip was supposed to add another rare animal to that history. But when his guide led him deeper through the trees, they crossed paths with five female Elephants guarding a calf. Then the herd charged.

Dosio was fatally trampled, while his guide was left seriously injured. The shotgun Dosio had been carrying was lost in the chaos, and reports say he’d only been issued it because Gabonese law barred him from bringing his own rifle.

Forest Elephants are endangered. Yellow-Backed Duikers are shy and rarely seen. Neither species asked to become somebody’s next trophy.

And this time, the forest didn’t hand over another head for the wall.

Federal agents smashed his truck window, sprayed him with chemical agents, detained him for three days, denied him contact with his family, and released him without charges. He missed his daughter’s third birthday while sitting in a cell.

No person on American soil should fear being treated this way, least of all a citizen and veteran at the hands of his own government. A nation that can do this to a U.S. citizen and veteran can do it to anyone.

Wildlife-vehicle collisions cost the US around $8 to $10 billion annually. 200 people die in these collisions every year, and over a million large animals are killed too.

A wildlife crossing with fencing costs about $5-15 million to build. If the US spent $8 billion a year on building these overpasses, we could build around 800+ a year.

Banff National Park built 44 crossings over 30 years. Wildlife-vehicle collisions along treated sections of highway dropped by 80%. The crossings paid for themselves in avoided property damage and injuries within a few years.

The evidence is strong: wildlife crossings save human and animal lives and often pay back substantial costs over time.

The remaining challenge is finding the will to build them.
