Jesse Lingard's Career Is Not What You Think It Is. People call it a failure...I think it's a journey. A very wonderful journey

Let me tell you something about Jesse Lingard that most people completely get wrong, because they look at the last two or three years and think that is the whole story, when really it is just the final chapter of one of the most interesting journeys in modern English football.

At 18, he was doing what every United academy graduate does, which is waiting, learning, and going out on loan to prove he belongs, and he went to Leicester, Birmingham, Brighton, and Derby before most fans had even learned to spell his name properly.

he was clearly talented. But because of his size, he actually found it difficult to match his agemates physically. Many think he was in the same class as Rashford. He was actually about 2 classes Rashford's senior. He was Pogba's mate.

When he finally broke into the United first team under Van Gaal in 2015, he showed his level, as he scored in an FA Cup Final. The next season, he scored in the communityshield final, scored in an EFL Cup Final, won the Europa League, and played in a World Cup semi-final for England in 2018, which is more than most players who get called "world class" on social media have ever done.

Then things got complicated in the way life sometimes does, and his mother's illness affected him deeply, his form suffered, and people who had been cheering him in 2018 were writing career obituaries by 2021, which honestly says more about those people than it does about Lingard.

Then West Ham happened. He had a resurgence over there. In fact, in just 16 games on loan he scored 9 goals and provided 5 assists and reminded the world who he was. He went on to have a disappointing spell at Forest after though.

So he went to South Korea, became club captain at FC Seoul, scored 19 goals and 10 assists across 67 games, and now at 33 he has just signed for Corinthians in Brazil, making him the first Englishman ever to play in the Brazilian top flight, and he will be linking up again with Memphis Depay who was his teammate at Old Trafford all those years ago.

Most people would have retired quietly after Nottingham Forest and nobody would have blamed them, but Lingard keeps going to places where nobody expects him and finding something worth fighting for.

He has had quite the career and I wish him all the best.
