The decision to support Jacob Zuma was not my personal choice or private project — it was a congress resolution, taken collectively by a democratic organisation. That historical fact matters.

But collective decisions do not erase individual responsibility. I take full responsibility for my part — entirely and without qualification.

I am among two or three who have repeatedly apologised publicly and without excuses for this error. We do so not because we are forced, but because conscience demands it.

We ignored two major warning signs that were in plain sight:
The Shabir Shaik corruption trial, especially the evidence around the R500,000 bribe involving Thales — and the rape trial, with all its disturbing details.

We convinced ourselves that these were secondary issues compared to what we believed were more urgent priorities at the time:
decent work through industrialisation, mass employment creation, quality education, accessible healthcare, land redistribution/food security, and the fight against crime and corruption.

That was our tragic mistake.

We failed to grasp a fundamental truth:
There can be no progressive programme without ethical leadership.
There can be no development agenda without integrity.
There can be no justice without accountability.

By separating policy goals from moral leadership, we blinded ourselves. In doing so, we helped open the door to institutional decay and the looting of the very democratic project.

It was not just an error of judgement.
It was a political blunder of historic proportions.

I own that. But then can we move forward instead of forever debating 2005?

A man has died under mysterious circumstances after collapsing while hugging a relative at a tavern in Ga-Sekgopo.

According to information gathered at the scene, the two family members were embracing during a moment of excitement when they suddenly fell to the ground. The relative survived the fall, but the man remained motionless.

Emergency personnel responded and found the man unresponsive. Paramedics declared him dead on arrival.

Modjadji’skloof SAPS have opened an inquest case. Investigators will conduct further examinations to determine the exact cause of death.
