A U.S. congressman wants to change how we legally “own” video games.

Rep. Ritchie Torres has announced plans to introduce the Power To The Players Act, a bill that would direct the FTC to create rules protecting consumers who buy video games.

The proposal would give players three basic rights:

>The right to own the games they purchase, rather than simply receiving a revocable license
>The right to keep playing games after online servers are shut down, through an offline mode
>The right to transfer or resell games they own

Torres argues that if a company can take a game away simply by shutting down its servers, then the consumer didn’t really buy the game in the first place.

Torres also hopes the legislation could eventually establish a precedent for ownership rights across other parts of the digital economy:

“If you pay for it, you own it.”

RUMOR: XBOX could be betting on bringing back physical media for next generation!🚀

✅Microsoft is actively hiring an XBOX Games Supply Strategist

✅This position manages the entire lifecycle of physical media, including manufacturing, distribution, inventory, and retail sales.

✅Listing indicates that Microsoft still plans to produce physical game copies for future releases.

✅This against recent rumors about Xbox moving to an all-digital format and aligns with their “Disc to Digital” program, which allows users to convert physical discs into digital licenses.

____________

Rooting for Asha Sharma to put XBOX on the right side of history and force the continued production of physical media in gaming.

Set an example @asha_shar and our competition back into gaming, let XBOX be the system that forces others to maintain physical media production.

I, as a huge PlayStation fan since PS1, have been MASSIVELY disappointed with their strategy this generation and their predatory practices especially in the last few months.

Physical media must be protected at all costs because:

✅Represents ownership
✅Maintains competitive pricing
✅Used on any account/region
✅Not reliant on networks
✅Allows collector’s market, second hand market and trading to continue

Going back to refuting bad faith arguments against physical media, and false narratives passed on by Sony and the industry, with new info and statements🚀

🗣️“You just want physical games for nostalgia”

✅Physical games represent:

A) Ownership
B) Competitive pricing
C) Second hand market & trading
D) No reliance on networks & internet
E) Not tied to a user account
F) Playable worldwide without region lock
G) Collectible value

🗣️“85% of players buy digital”

✅15% or even 5% in this industry is still millions of people bringing in hundreds of millions of not billions o revenue.

✅Statistics have also shown us that in the UK, France, Japan and Australia, physical game sales go higher than %40 and %50 for games like Resident Evil and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

✅PlayStation’s Wolverine reportedly sold 35% physical in the US & 51% physical in Europe

🗣️“Nobody buys physical games”

✅Several physical games go out of stock for weeks, or ship with a disc that requires downloading more.

✅Physical games don’t lack interest, they lack genuine support.

✅The industry appears to calculate DLC, microtransactions, digital only games and free to play as “digital purchases” which heavily inflates the number of digital games against physical media

🗣️“Netflix and Spotify ended movie and music Blu-Rays and CDs”

✅Movies are still being sold on Blu-Ray and 4K UHD

✅Music still comes to CDs, vinyl and even cassette tapes that actually work

✅Artists use variants of the same vinyl and/or CD to boost sales for how much in demand they

✅PlayStation and Rockstar continue to release their game soundtracks on vinyl multiple vinyl variants, and GTA6 soundtrack is coming to vinyl with liquid inside and 8 other variants along with CDs

✅Despite music being far smaller as files and much more accessible and less demanding than video games which can go over 100GB, digital and streaming did not end physical media

🗣️“It’s expensive to make games on disc”

✅Games will be more expensive if an all digital future is implemented.

✅You will pay the same price for a glorified rental that can be taken any time due to licensing agreements or account loss/suspension.

✅With the absence of competition, regional and dynamic pricing, games can be more expensive than ever

✅Second hand market gives players an option to get games cheaper and keeps the market/pricing in check

🗣️“This is fear-mongering! Sony would never take away your digital games. It never happened to me”

✅It happens to so many people, like the 500 movies that Sony removed from users libraries and many games that come and go regardless of how much you paid for them

✅Buying only a license without a copyright physical component that guarantees ownership could mean you lose the game if your account was hack or suspended, licenses expired or any issues happened with the network

🗣️“Opposing physical media is not a thing. It’s only a niche crying about them online”

✅The outrage extended not only to gaming media but to mainstream media in general, with many celebrities and corporations expressing disdain and ridicule towards Sony

✅Various industry legends including Hideo Kojima, Shawn Layden, Dan Houser, SEGA, Yoko Taro and many others expressed disagreement with the decision citing that physical media is important for ownership, collectible value among other things

✅Digital Foundry’s John Linneman stated that various studios and publishers told him there’s resentment within the industry towards Sony

✅Sony is reportedly surveying creators about how they feel about physical media

✅NYU business professor and gaming analyst Joost van Dreunen gave a statement:

“People have a need to collect.

That’s where physical sales are still incredibly relevant for the consumer market. The industry is ready to move on, but not so fast. This is increasingly a big part of it.”

✅They hold sentimental value to players and collectors, and that is a big market

Since Sony announcenced end of physical media:

- Got the biggest backlash since PS3 launch
- People working day in and night to make emulator and jailbreak work out of spite for discs
- GTA 6 leaked and will probably leak more or it seems
- A ton of damage to the brand

[Rino🚀 @RinoTheBouncer]

Three months ago today, Sony announced their predatory plan to end physical game media, leading to a global outrage that transcended gaming into all media, turning Sony into the subject of resentment and ridicule🚀

Here’s what all-digital future means:

❌No ownership
❌No preservation
❌No options
❌No second hand market or trading
❌Total reliance on internet/networks
❌Price increase on a whim w/o competition
❌Region locked “code in box” games
❌Being at the mercy or Sony’s terms
❌64% of the world lose access to games since they have no dedicated PlayStation Store to their countries

Here’s what Sony did after the outrage:

⬇️Double down, claiming that they’ve “carefully considered” the decision when they didn’t even bother informing their publishing partners according to reports

⬇️Sending players emails reminding them that the terms mean digital games aren’t owned by players

⬇️Ended partnership with Hideo Kojima suddenly mid June, on Metal Gear Solid’s spiritual successor type of action espionage called PHYSINT, which is now being published by XBOX

⬇️Argued in court that players don’t own digital games using a laughable argument pretending to be deliberately obtuse about ownership meaning

⬇️Insisted that players do not deserve any bit of the tariff refunds they received from the US

This has put Sony under such tough criticism due to their total disrespect for players and consumer’s rights:

👉Reports stated that the industry has an negative reaction from the industry causing great resentment towards Sony according ti studios and publishers who spoke with John Linneman or Digital Foundry

👉Reports came up stating that Sony is now surveying studios/publishers regarding how they feel about physical media giving a small hope that the decision could be overturned

Sony has based their entire decision on lies, greed, terrible management and total detachment from gamers and creators desires, and global markets:

✅Multiple games sold 40-50% physical in markets like UK, France, Japan and Australia

✅Per documents that surfaced, the industry calculates DLC, microtransactions, digital only and free to play games as “digital sales” which inflates their numbers

✅Various mainstream media outlets like NBC have reported on the matter, interviewing those speaking on the negatives of a digital only future, so this isn’t a niche internet outrage

✅Music, film, shows and books continue to be produced on physical media despite the existence of the digital alternative far more conveniently

✅Several industry legends have spoken in support of physical media, and expressed disappointment with ending it, including:

🫡Hideo Kojima
🫡Shuji Utsumi – SEGA President & COO
🫡Dan Houser – Rockstar Co-Founder
🫡Sohei Niikawa – Disgaea Creator
🫡Josh Fairhurst – Limited Run Co-Founder
🫡Yoko Taro
🫡Naoki Hamaguchi – FFVIIR Director
🫡Jean-Luc Mélenchon – French Politician
🫡GOG – spoke in support ownership of games as a must, digital and physical

Physical video game media must continue to be produced. We must speak out and never give up.

This is our most basic right as consumers to vote with our voices and wallets.
