such as the rainforests of Lorentz National Park and the coral reefs of Komodo, are treasures of biodiversity. These places are not just tourist destinations but also crucial ecosystems that support a wide array of life forms, some of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
The fossils from Sangiran indicate that Homo erectus, an early ancestor of modern humans, lived in the area approximately 1.5 million to 200,000 years ago. The tools and artifacts uncovered at the site show evidence of advanced cognitive abilities and social behaviors.
Historical Significance
Discovered in the 1930s by Dutch anthropologist Gustav Heinrich Ralph von Koenigswald, the Sangiran site has since yielded some of the most important hominid fossils in the world, including numerous specimens of Homo erectus.
The site has produced over 60% of all known Homo erectus fossils, alongside a variety of tools and animal remains. These discoveries have helped scientists’ piece together the puzzle of human ancestry, revealing a rich tapestry of life that existed millions of years ago.
