BCA is saddened to hear of the arson fire at the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple on Dec. 31st. Instead of welcoming the new year with a service, the members were cleaning up and assessing the damages.

124 years ago, two ministers from Japan arrived in San Francisco to help fill a void in the hearts of Jodo Shinshu Buddhists living in the United States. This was the beginning of the now Buddhist Churches of America.

Happy Hanamatsuri (花祭り "Flower festival")! Today we celebrate the birth of Siddhartha Gautama who became Sakyamuni, the historical Buddha. Temples will observe with a special service, Kanbutsu-e (灌仏会) and a beautiful Hanamido (flower altar).
Today, December 8, we acknowledge the day Prince Siddhartha Gautama realized the truth to the sufferings in life, attained enlightenment, thus becoming Sakyamuni Buddha.
During the Fall Equinox Jodo Shinshu Buddhists observe Ohigan (お彼岸). While the day and night are equal there is a balance. It is a time to reflect on the nature of our true self as we listen to the Dharma with gratitude. Namo Amida Butsu

Today is BCA Founding Day. On September 1, 1899, two ministers from Japan arrived in San Francisco to help fill a void in the hearts of Jodo Shinshu Buddhists living in the United States.
Today (5/21) we observe Gotan-e, commemorating the birth of Shinran Shonin, founder of our Jodo Shinshu Buddhist tradition. BCA temples hold a special Gotan-e services expressing our gratitude.

Today (2/15), the Buddhist Churches of America observes Nirvana Day. This is the day Sakyamuni Buddha died and passed into Parinirvana. His last words were, "After I leave this world, make the Dharma your place of refuge. Make yourself a light ... Follow the Dharma diligently."
The Buddhist Churches of America reflects on the passing of Thich Nhat Hanh. Zen teacher, poet, and an early voice for Engaged Buddhism, he often wrote about death as a transition, not an absolute end. One of his books, No death, no fear, is still available in bookstores.
