When responding to President Boko’s inaugural State of the Nation address in 2024, I pledged that the BCP as the official opposition, will adopt a bipartisan approach to key national issues that demand national consensus. In the life of every nation, there will always be moments when the nation needs to look beyond its political colour differences and hold hands to advance the nations interests.

One such moment is the threat posed by the possible spread of the Foot and Mouth Cattle Disease. Our national herd is under threat from a disease that lingers along our porous border line with two of our neighbours (Zimbabwe and South Africa).

The other week, BCP MPs travelled to the villages along the boarder line with South Africa to gain first hand experience of the situation on the ground and urge farmers to maintain high vigilance. Last week we joined the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee responsible for Agriculture and visited the FMD Command Centre. We salute the dedication of the men and women working around the clock to keep the enemy at bay!

One of the strongest advocates for politics that transcend partisan labels was John F. Kennedy and he captured the sentiment well when he said, “𝘼𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙠 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙪𝙗𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙧, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙧.” This is the case with FMD, the nation is looking for the right answer to the crisis we face, not a UDC or BCP answer.

I remember my first meeting with Servant Gabatsholwe Disho MP Okavango EAST. It was in Maun at my residence and he had come to exchange notes with me as he contemplated the possibility of contesting for an MP seat. I got a sense at the time that I may have given him an impression that contesting for Parliament was a climb up a steep mountain, given my personal experiences that I shared with him. The meeting was inconclusive.

A few weeks later we drove together from Maun to Gaborone and the Disho seated at the driver’s seat was no longer speaking with uncertainty. The determination was clear in the voice, he was going all out to contest and win the newly created Okavango East constituency. When I visited his constituency to formally introduce him as the Botswana Congress Party candidate for the 2024 elections, I was convinced he had overcome all doubts about his capabilities to deliver victory. As they say, the rest is history!

Today we had a moment to reflect on the journey that he is clearly enjoying. My message to him was short and simple - you are doing a good job for a first term MP, maintain the focus and ignore the noise that seeks to distract you. Keep going strong my comrade.
Many of us in the opposition terrain can identify with a quote from Jack Ma (the Alibaba founder) on the importance of resilience when he said, “𝙏𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙞𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙙, 𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙚, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚 𝙨𝙪𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙚.”

In the words of one of Botswana’s finest athletes Isaac Makwala, “𝒎𝒚 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒘𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆” as I leave Moreomaoto. History has been made by this small village which normally does not catch headlines in national political debates.

The norm is that a by-election attracts fewer votes than a general election. I don’t recall if this norm has ever been defied in the history of Botswana elections. Moreomaoto did the impossible, more voters turned up to vote in the by-election than was the case in the 2024 general elections.

The BCP, a party that contested in the ward for the first time in 2024 securing only 50 votes, also achieved a feat that may be a national record, almost tripling its votes to register a 𝟭𝟴𝟲% 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 of the votes attracted. From 11% of the votes cast in 2024 to 30% in 2025 - “𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲.” This was the conclusion of our evaluation meeting earlier today.
