Statement by the Political Bureau of the Kurdistan Democratic Party

We strongly and unequivocally condemn the treacherous and disgraceful terrorist attack that targeted the residence of Mr. Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, in the city of Duhok.

This attack on President Nechirvan Barzani is, in reality, an attack on the Kurdistan Region itself and on his sincere efforts to advance peace and unity, as well as his initiatives to promote dialogue, stability, and security in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq amid the complex tensions facing the wider region.

We reaffirm that, in the face of ongoing conflicts and rising tensions in the region, the Kurdistan Region is not—and will not become—a party to these confrontations. The Kurdistan Region has consistently served as a force for peace and political stability, and it is imperative that all sides respect this principled position of neutrality.

We call on the Federal Government of Iraq and all relevant parties to assume their responsibilities and take serious and effective measures to prevent such unprovoked attacks against the official and constitutional institutions of the Kurdistan Region. Targeting the political leadership of the Kurdistan Region, as well as the security and peace of its citizens, is a red line.

The will of the people of Kurdistan for coexistence, peace, and development is far stronger than these pressures of warmongering and attempts to sow instability.
