What excites me about my future in dietetics?
An increased focus on metabolic health & healthy lifestyles in HIV care has provided increased opportunities for dietitians. I am excited about dietitians providing holistic care which helps improve quality of life..
He encourages members to obtain the best out of their work & has shown great commitment to & enthusiasm towards both committee members & ordinary members of the group.
We would like to thank Al for all his hard work & dedication, he is certainly an exemplary Pioneer in Dietetics!
#DW2025 Our pioneer of dietetics is Alastair Duncan. Al's pioneering has seen him become a consultant dietitian, pushing standards for the 2 clinical areas of HIV and Obesity. Al is so supportive of others' learning and progress. He is an inspiration and a joy to work with 🤩
Al was awarded an NIHR clinical doctoral research fellowship to investigate why so many people living with HIV were developing diabetes and continued his research into the complexities of HIV care.
His knowledge is extensive&he is always keen to share this with the group which is invaluable to its professional development. He has maintained links between other professional bodies in HIV care including BHIVA, HIVPA & NHIVNA
Al joined the Dietitians in HIV care just under 30 years ago & his unwavering passion is reflected in the years of dedicated work. Al has worked in most positions on the committee including being Chair/co-Chair at least twice, he is currently taking Education&Research officer
Al has always had a passion for HIV care &after completing his first degree in biological sciences he started volunteering at The ChelWest Hospital & the Food Chain which led him to complete an MSc in Nutrition at Kings College London& his path in dietetics & HIV grew from there
Al developed the Living Well service to support people living with HIV as they age. His current research focuses on helping people living with obesity, including older people, those from the Black African & Black Caribbean communities, those living with additional challenges

We are keeping our small specialist group alive & it has been growing in strength over the past few years with a bigger membership number than we have had in many years!
