Sad to learn yesterday of a deaf stroke patient in a Cambridgeshire hospital for 3 weeks without access to interpreters. Remote interpreting available but they didn’t know how to work it. Imagine being in hospital for 3 weeks after something as serious as a stroke and not being able to communicate with doctors about it.
We @BDA_Deaf would like to acknowledge & thank all those who participated in today's #Westminster debate. They've raised so many vital issues. If the Minister @VotePursglove truly takes this as his department's to-do list for #BSL & resolves the points raised, much will improve.
We at @BDA_Deaf have advised a number of MPs, including @NorwichChloe, on the issues that need to be raised concerning #BSL & Government's disappointing end-of-year report on the implementation of the #BSLAct. Policy & Research Lead Tom Lichy is in Parliament to press our case.
Clearly a lot of awareness in Westminster that not all parents of deaf children receive free #BSL classes. 90% of these are hearing people. How else will they learn to sign with their child? Why are we STILL having to explain how awful #LanguageDeprivation is for deaf children?
Excellent to see @NorwichChloe open today's debate on #BSL in Westminster with clear reference to @BDA_Deaf asking why we are still waiting for Deaf leadership to be required in all organisations & institutions with primary responsibility for #BSL issues. #NoTokenism#RespectDeaf
The first Government Report on delivery of the #BSLAct was disappointing (https://t.co/sn7fu4yWXc…). BDA wants to see more robust plans of how the BSL Advisory Board expects to work with the Deaf community to find evidence of barriers & identify good practice to address them.
BDA is looking forward to this afternoon's debate on BSL in the UK Parliament.
Watch it here: https://t.co/V5TQ9VGnrU - scroll down to line 15.
BDA, the Deaf community & our allies must keep asking difficult questions: is the Government doing what it said it would do for BSL?
