My readers are wrong! They're wrong! It's not melodramatic! The characters are finally tuned. The subtlety is just too complex for them.
Rereading draft a couple months later: Oh.

Vehemently dislike half the dialogue I've ever written: the words, the phrasing, the rhythm...
But then again I also dislike and want to rewrite half the dialogue in major award winning works so what do I know?
Anyway, back to the desk.

How important is it to you to come up with unique metaphors in your work? How important is it to say something someone had never quite said the same way before?

Writing Truth: When I edit I have a harder time leaving a sentence untouched than I do changing it. Can't quite trust myself to have gotten it correct the first time around.

Why can't my characters just want to say the things I want them to say?
Why do they have to make it is difficult and then make it sound so off when I force it down their throats anyway?

Writing is the best.
All your hopes and dreams, all your passions, all your insecurities and vulnerabilities all neatly contained in a little 8.5x11 rectangle.
Attempting to pull back the melodrama without losing all the tension is really just a great deal of fun. It's not frustrating at all. Look. I'm smiling. Obviously that means I'm happy.

The fun bit about writing is that inevitably the lines you stress over the most are the ones your reader will gloss over and the lines that came naturally will be the ones that resonate the most.

Writing's like poker. For the vast majority of the time it's a hellhole of penny-less despair but when you're on a hot streak and the going's good, don't you dare stop. Ride that sucker until you vomit.

The fear of having forgotten a good idea by the time it is time to include it into the story is probably the biggest driving force keeping me productive.
