HEADER: Curious Case of VanDyke - NIA Drops Terror Charges, Bail Window Opens ?

STORY :

In a twist in the VanDyke case, the NIA has dropped UAPA charges from its current chargesheet against US national Matthew VanDyke and six Ukrainians arrested for allegedly training armed groups in Myanmar in weapon handling and drone warfare.

Sources say the module, with footprint extending into India's Northeast, will for now be chargesheeted under Sections 21/23 of the Foreigners Act for illegal border crossing. The NIA has stated that the UAPA probe remains open and a supplementary chargesheet may be filed if an offence is established. Passports of the accused are likely to be impounded.

The move comes right after a series of high-level engagements - US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor meeting Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and outreach involving US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. While pressure from D.C.-based groups to free VanDyke has been building, the MEA has officially termed it a legal matter.

My Take :

This is more than a legal technicality, it's classic give-and-take diplomacy. You drop UAPA for now, you open a legal window for bail under Foreigners Act, but you keep the UAPA probe alive to keep leverage. Question is - why the sudden softening ?

Who is India getting back in return ? Or is this simply Delhi buckling under sustained US pressure to get back their VVIP man ?

The optics of NIA dropping terror charges just days after the US Ambassador's meetings with top officials in New Delhi, doesn’t meet the eye.
