*Correction: it is also vital to note that many enslaved people did not learn of their freedom because they were not able to read AND due to slaveowners withholding information.
Juneteenth celebrates the announcement of the end of slavery in Texas. When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, however, many enslaved people did not learn of their freedom because they were not able to read. Educational injustice and literacy inequality persist today.
That is why, in observation of Juneteenth, BHN staff has pledged to support literacy efforts in St. Louis. Make a pledge like BHN staff and #readtoeducate. You can focus on reading and educating about Juneteenth, or grabbing a book and reading to your children and loved ones.
