This can result in greater housing affordability, increased homebuilding activity, project viability and broader economic growth for #Ontario, including protecting well-paying jobs in the industry. The full HST rebate will save new homebuyers as much as $130,000. “[Developers] sold more homes in the first couple of weeks of the HST announcement than they did in the previous three or four months combined,” Justin Sherwood, BILD COO, told @TheTorontoSun.

As the needs of the Canadian population evolves, our built environment needs to evolve with them. Living in a home comfortably, accessibly and free of barriers is part of the future that our members are thinking about, writes BILD President and CEO Dave Wilkes in @TheTorontoSun.

While Ontario has waived the eight per cent provincial portion of the HST on new builds, which has led to a growing number of buyers to purchase new homes, the remaining five per cent charged by the federal government is still in question. “We continue to call for the clarity around how the mechanism will work for both the federal and provincial portions of the HST so that people can purchase with confidence, understanding how that’s going to flow through,” BILD President and CEO Dave Wilkes told @GlobalNews.

In a new report, economic stress accounted for half of a steep decline in happiness among Canadian youth and housing affordability was the biggest factor in that, writes the @globeandmail Editorial Board. The Editorial Board argues that all levels of governments need to make it easier to build, by reducing red tape, making it simple and straightforward to get permits, and by changing zoning rules to allow more types of homes.
