You speak as if the majority of women walking around out there in the real world are walking around without any makeup. Hard for anyone, male or female, to get a good handle on that. Unless you're so special that women are constantly walking around you without makeup.

2. "Their faces were scanned in without makeup, that's why they look that way."
Yeah, no. We have footage of Stefanie Joosten having her face scanned in for Quiet and she's definitely wearing makeup. While that doesn't mean that every studio did it this way, it certainly doesn't mean what you're suggesting is the norm.

3. "They're going for a grim and gritty, more realistic feel so you can focus on how good the writing is. Overly attractive characters would distract from this."
If this is what anyone's going for, then their writing better be REALLY DAMN GOOD, because, while fanservice and attractive characters can compensate for or distract from bad writing somewhat, it takes a hell of a lot to look past an unattractive art style and focus on the writing. Unfortunately, the studios that tend to "uglify" their women also have awful writing teams, so it's pretty much a lose-lose situation.

Also, you're claiming that the glammed up look of the female characters in "Resident Evil" breaks suspension of disbelief for you somehow...I mean, really? We have zombies and Norse gods running around. Have female characters wearing a bit of foundation, eyeshadow, and lipstick isn't going to suddenly make the whole thing more difficult to swallow.
