⚠️A note for student-athlete parents
A parent recently shared that their child was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

Type 1 is an autoimmune condition the body stops making insulin. It is not caused by diet, sports, or parenting, and there is no reliable way to prevent it right now.

What does help is recognizing symptoms early, because they can look a lot like “just sports/the grind.”

Insulin helps the body use glucose from the bloodstream. Without it, blood sugar can rise quickly and affect energy, hydration, vision, and more.

🚨Symptoms parents and coaches often miss in active kids:
• Feeling tired all day, even after rest (not just post-practice fatigue)
• Excessive thirst that water doesn’t fix
• Frequent urination, including extra bathroom trips at practice or nighttime / new bedwetting
• Blurred vision
• Unexplained weight loss despite eating
• Increased appetite
• In more serious cases: nausea, fruity-smelling breath, or extreme drowsiness (seek emergency care)

A simple way to remember the most common early signs is the
4 Ts:
❌Toilet (peeing more)
❌Thirsty
❌Tired
❌Thinner

These can develop over days to weeks. In athletes they are easy to explain away as dehydration, a growth spurt, extra conditioning, or “they’re just training hard.”

If several of these show up together or something just feels off get a same-day check with your pediatrician. A finger-stick blood sugar test is quick.

Kids with type 1 diabetes can and do keep competing at every level. Management (insulin, monitoring, and a plan with coaches) makes sports safe. Early diagnosis simply means they start that plan sooner and avoid a medical emergency.
