As fat-fingered election officials count the final votes in South Africa’s May 29 election, worth noting that, its many stumbles notwithstanding, it has held elections regularly without fail since the end of Apartheid. The voter turnout, however, tells us a lot about what Mzansi thinks of its democracy:
•1994 – voter turnout 86.87%
•1999 – it WENT UP to 89.3%
•2004 - 76.73%
• 2009 -it inched up to 77.3% from the previous election.
•2014 - 73.48%
•2019 - 66.05%
•2024 – so far at 58.69%
What changed in 2014? The uptick in turnout from one election to the next one didn’t happen – and it has been heading only south since.
