One of my bigger challenges has been creating a framework for our coaches in terms of how we want all of our teams to play and our identity on the field.
A few things that were top of mind when creating our most current version…
“Galway’s Relentless Edge: How Effort delivers in the All-Ireland Camogie Final”
Lead Stat was Effort.
In a game of fine margins, Galway’s biggest weapon wasn’t a free-taker, a forward’s finish, or a tactical masterstroke, it was pure work rate.
Effort Stat (Tackles, Hooks & Blocks):
•Galway: 84
•Cork: 73
That 11-action difference equates to one extra defensive pressure every 3 minutes, constantly disrupting Cork’s rhythm.
2-3 Player Press. Galway’s Pressure Game
The quality of Galway’s work was as telling as the quantity:
•Galway: 48% of their tackles involved 2–3 players swarming the ball carrier.
•Cork: 33%
That collective press forced turnovers, slowed Cork’s attack, and fed Galway’s extra 7 shots.
Shot Volume & Accuracy
•Total shots: Galway 27 – Cork 20
•Scoring rate: Galway 55% vs Cork 70%
One to note: Galway’s extra shots came directly from turnovers won (45 vs 34) and repeat pressure.
Puckout Battle
•Own puckouts won: Cork 90% vs Galway 47%
•Cork dominated their restarts, but Galway’s press flipped enough possession to neutralise the PO advantage.
Analyst’s Note:
Galway’s win was based on workrate.
The 84 effort actions and 67% collective press rate created chaos for Cork, fed the Galway shot count, and allowed the calmest finisher on the field, Carrie Dolan, to close the deal.
“Principles before Tactics.”
Put your time and energy into embedding the Principles of Play — because if the team doesn’t live its principles, you’ll never realise its full potential.
Tactics without principles are like shortcuts without a map.
Master the identity first. Then shape the strategy.
As intercounty contests gain momentum, the clock is also counting down for GPA members to apply for the 2025 MIC GPA Scholarship, with the deadline for applications set for Friday, 25 July.
