The system is deeply broken, but blaming the salaries of those working in the trenches of healthcare is deeply misguided.
On Thanksgiving Day, a child came in to the hospital in cardiac arrest. I spent over 8 hrs at their bedside before they were stable enough for me to walk away to round on my other patients. They needed CPR, a breathing tube, a central line, and an arterial line in addition to another emergent surgery. They needed an expert who could immediately diagnose and emergently treat the underlying, thankfully reversible disease process. I called and discussed the case with > 4 other subspecialists. I then had to stay and document on that patient and my additional patients that day, resulting in a 14 hr shift away from my young family on a holiday. The patient will have an excellent outcome ❤️
How much do you think I made for this shift? I think the answer will surprise you. My hourly rate is about on par with a women’s haircut at a salon.
To be clear, no one goes into pediatrics for the money. I am not complaining about my pay. There is nothing more rewarding and meaningful than what I experienced that day and everyday I go to work in the #PedsICU as a physician. But I won’t sit here silently while you say we’re overpaid.
Do you want a highly trained physician available to you 24/7 365? Seems like cutting physician reimbursement, which will have a minuscule effect on healthcare expenditure, will only worsen the current physician shortage, particularly in #pediatrics and other non surgical specialities.
Yay! MATCHED!
I'll be staying @YaleCardiology for Electrophysiology fellowship in my final stage of medical training! Very grateful to my mentors and family for their support 🙏🏾 (1/)
No words can express how lucky, grateful our trainees have been to have Dr. Marwan Azar as our program director! Will miss him greatly - wishing you all the success on your next career endeavors!! #IDTwitter#MedTwitter
Thrilled to welcome Nour, Sophia, Claire, Andrew and Christopher to the Yale ID family @YaleIDFellows
We look forward to meeting you and (re)introducing you to New Haven Pizza!
Thrilled to have presented a compelling case at the intersection of transplant ID and critical care! Grateful for the inspiring connections and unwavering support and trust, especially from Dr.Marwan Azar. This opportunity truly means a lot! @YaleIDFellows@YaleMedPSTP@TradIMYale
We have an open #TID fellowship position @VUMC_IDFellows. @VUMCTransplant is a high-volume transplant center ( lung, heart, kidney, pancreas, liver) with a diverse patient population and pathology. The program has expanded to 6 faculty members and APRN.
@ASanchez_PS@davserantes 😂 you know me too well! But this is a good question! In cases where it’s florid, acute typical meningitis, I hardly ever think about acute phase reactants 🤔 in chronic and subacute conditions, they can be misleading. So the window for CRP utility is unclear to me
Coccidioidomycosis illness script ⏳
Most immunocompetent are minimally symptomatic, but consider if travel to SW / Pacific NW *and*
⏳ CAP unresponsive to initial abx
⏳ Non-specific acute inflammatory syndrome
or
⏳ New polyarticular arthralgias +/- erythema nodosum/multiforme
Cocci. has 2 murder weapons🤺
🤺 ARDS (if marked inoculum of arthroconidia)
🤺 Chronic meningitis (mild "non-specific" headache can be easily missed, but ~95% mortality in 2 years)

In a new study, researchers identified the targets in the human body to which pathogens transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks & other vectors bind, which could help address the rising threat of vector-borne diseases.

We intuitively know that not all Staph aureus bacteremia is created equal when it comes to prognosis.
This paper in @CIDJournal backs that up with data, providing a valuable way to categorize severity -- and a potential stratification for studies. https://t.co/HjhmNTMZOu
Am I dreaming or is fellowship really over? I will miss my time at Yale @YaleIDFellows . Won't miss crazy New Haven drivers though. Excited for what's to come. Road trip time!!
Look who can’t wait for the incoming first year fellows to take over the busy consult services 😜 Can’t believe it’s already been a whole year! They grow up so fast - congrats new second year ID Fellows!! 🥹 #IDTwitter#MedTwitter
