Worries about being labelled “unprofessional” are preventing medical students from speaking out about concerns related to their education and clinical placements, according to a new survey. @Helen_Packer reports #medicine#highered

The Treasury Committee is reviewing whether the student loan system is fair and wants to hear from doctors and medical students. But you only have a short window to tell them what it’s actually like.
Doctors are often hit harder by student loans due to longer training and delayed earnings.
When responding to the survey, you may want to mention...
• the cost of longer medical training
• interest and repayments early in your career
• the combined impact of loans and tax
• how debt affects morale, retention and progression
The survey closes Tuesday 14 April.

Today, we are calling this out, the government must immediately pause all medical school expansion until our concerns are addressed.
We have raised our concerns with ministers and today we want to hear from you, let us know your experience https://t.co/rPzYJO1b8z
We have heard repeated concerns from medical students’ that the significant expansion in medical school places is affecting their educational experience and their future career prospects.
Successive governments have taken the politically expedient option of expanding medical school places without investment in medical academics, placement capacity and postgraduate training opportunities.
The BMA is working with Kent and Medway Medical School, Public Health Experts and students to ensure medical students are protected during the ongoing Meningitis outbreak in Kent.
Please continue to follow advice given by the Medical School, as well as the UKHSA.
I am so proud to have trained at a Scottish Medical School. I am heart sore that the medical students in this report don’t have access to the same quality of education and optimism re job prospects as I and my peers had.
Thanks @BMAScotland: Nothing works without @BMAstudents🏴!
Medical student funding in England is broken. We’re campaigning to #FixOurFunding, so students retain their entitlement to full student finance maintenance funding throughout their years of study.

Medical students, tell every Resident doctor you know in England, to return their ballot paper! Tomorrow is their last safe day to return it. A strong ballot result has the potential to impact your future pay, terms and conditions, and job security for years to come.
This should NOT be the norm. It’s time for full funding for every year of medical study.

Student finance is landing this week, but for many medical students, the struggle continues.
Longer courses, sky-high rent, and limited work options mean some are skipping essentials and falling into debt just to stay in medicine.
The government has introduced emergency legislation to prioritise UK graduates for foundation and speciality training. We cautiously welcome this legislation, but the government must go further.

In our countdown to 2026 we’re running through some of our campaign highlights.
The amazing work of our @BMAStudents has highlighted how being a medical student has now become unaffordable – forcing many to drop out of uni all together.
