This is actually not true, and evidence has debunked this British lie. During this period of the longest colonial war on the continent and in the world, the Brits realized they simply couldn’t win without digging deeper, and that meant good old biological warfare and scorched earth tactics.

So, around the mid-1850s, the most brutal war in the history of the African continent occurred from 1850 to 1853 between the British and their allies and the Gcaleka/Ngqika nations and their allies.

Around the same time, South Africa was going through one of the worst droughts in recorded history, meaning crops and livestock farming were becoming difficult.

The British had begun using their most effective weapon much earlier than the 1850s, scorched earth tactics, which had gained them a lot of ground before. However, this time they also used biological warfare, bringing cows with lung sickness from Europe to come into contact with local cows, knowing it would devastate amaXhosa. This is similar to how they killed most of the bison population to starve Native Americans, years after they had wiped out most of them with smallpox infested blankets.

The drought, the scorched earth tactics used by the British, and the cow lung sickness meant amaXhosa had to kill the majority of their livestock to prevent the disease from spreading and poisoning the people.

amaXhosa, along with their allies, would continue to fight uncolonized for another 20 years until 1879.
