I'm 79. When I was a kid I really wanted to be a grownup. But not for any of the usual reasons.

I wanted to be able to buy a 5¢ bag of M&Ms (Smarties) and eat them all myself instead of splitting them evenly with my 3 brothers and 3 cousins.

I first went to work at 14, bucking hay in the hot sun. Six 10-hour days, $0.30 per hour. And I worked damn hard ever since to get to where I am today. The first home I owned was a clapped-out trailer on 1/8 acre of land.

I worked at the top three most dangerous jobs in the US—commercial fishing, roofing, and logging.

So please, dial back on the claims that boomers had it easy. I didn't, and almost none of my friends did. We got where we are the hard way.

Carney is stuck between provinces that can afford to play tough and Ottawa’s need to reach a deal. As expected, the “Elbows Up” strategy is now backfiring.

It’s brilliant for the Americans and a nightmare for Ottawa. The provincial liquor bans were simply foolish. Don’t expect a deal by August 19. Expect 50% tariffs on billions of dollars in trade.
