My book is out today! It's a history of mass incarceration and deportation told through the stories of migrants in American jails. I am really proud of it and would love to talk about it with students, colleagues, lawyers, activists, anyone!

wrote about the most important architectural legacy of the Trump administration: the conversion of logistics warehouses into detention centers https://t.co/NGPUnSXwq5
The busiest port in North America is 45 minutes down I-35 from Texas’ infamous migrant prison. I try to demystify their relationship in the April issue of Field Notes

Despite understandable attention on Minneapolis and other flashpoints of enforcement, it's the Miami field office that tops arrest rates in 2025 and 2026.
Yet you wouldn't know it given relatively low profile approach.

I encourage every local reporter who follows me to figure out which buildings in your city DHS is using to detain immigrants.
Everyday offices, rented years ago, are becoming makeshift detention sites. Leases should be available via GSA. DM me for help.

IMPT from Over the Weekend…
Blueprints of the proposed mega warehouse ICE jail leaked. This would jail 10,000 people, making it nearly 50% larger than America’s largest jail. You can zoom way in to see how many people who go in a single more. ..
BREAKING: Dan Ceisler, the new sheriff of Pennsylvania's Bucks County, just announced he has terminated his county's 287(g) contract with ICE.
Ceisler defeated GOP sheriff who'd joined the ICE program in November, & ran on quitting it; we reported then: https://t.co/8TLCy1fSA9
All summer, I’ve been speaking to a Nigerian mom of two kids who won fear-based protection in an immigration court. Under a previous admin, she would have likely been released, but ICE refused to let her out and tried to deport her to Ghana -> @MotherJones https://t.co/vMPJs6UtmD
I got to talk to @npr about sheriffs, jails, and all the ways people have made money from locking up migrants. (Featuring many stories from my book!)

The implications of this decision reverberates beyond LA. It effectively given DHS the green light to pursue these tactics across the country because it's clear it won't uphold future decisions from other district courts that also prohibit profiling during immigration arrests
Only a fraction of people murdered by ICE & CBP die in their jails. They deport many to their deaths, drive others to die by making the path to the US deadly, & do deadly policing near the border.
But as new cages for immigrants go up around the US, so too will jail deaths. AND
I wrote about the legions of private security guards helping carry out ICE's deportations (which have in the past been accused of making vigilante immigration arrests, in violation of federal law):
private prison giant GEO Group just granted its CEO & chairman new multimillion-dollar bonuses "in light of the unprecedented business opportunities that the Company is experiencing"
by that, of course, the company is referring to the disappearings & imprisonment of immigrants
Here is a report I wrote concerning the murders of ethnic Mexicans during la matanza. It incorporates three lists of those killed along with Texas Ranger scouting reports that identify likely murders.

Do you remember when I was posting this story a bunch?
Well, the incumbent sheriff (“Detain ‘Em Dave”) is handily losing the GOP primary right now to a challenger who says *he wasn't going far enough on helping ICE.* (Casts the lack of a Dem candidate in even starker light.)
