today i flew economy for 4 hours

my dad always used to say "economy builds character" as i was looking through the gap of the curtain from my economy class seat, waving to my mum in the hope that she would have mercy on my kind soul and give me a bite of her hot meal which is otherwise unattainable in economy

even today, my dad‘s words still stick with me. and so when i take short flights, i usually sit in economy, albeit in the first row or the emergency exit. i am tough, but i am no hero who sits in a middle seat in 27e or something

today, i observed scarcity mindset in economy

for those of you who have not been in economy, the stewardess walks by with drinks and peanuts and distributes them. my neighbour was urinating during the distribution phase so he did not receive his drink or peanuts. i also did not receive them bc i didn‘t want to eat or drink anything in that moment

upon his return, my neighbour was outraged about the apparent injustice that other people got 5 sips of sugar water and a grand total of 10 peanuts and he didn‘t. he was visibly upset for minutes. he even looked over multiple times trying to catch the stewardess on her way back to claim his free airdrop

i did not understand why anyone would be upset over the opportunity cost of 10 peanuts. after several minutes of thinking, i understood: middle class people try to optimise for "value for money". if they paid for something, they want to get the most out of it. and if they bought a plane ticket and that entitles you to a free drink and 10 peanuts, they will want to take full advantage of this opportunity. and if they are being robbed of this opportunity, it upsets them.

even if they don’t desire 10 peanuts but 10 peanuts are included in what they paid, they would demand them and eat them. this is in stark contrast to "abundance mindset" people

when i go for dinner with my rich friends, they optimise for "maximum utility" as opposed to "value for money". they would order a dish bc of the meat in there and they would just pick out the parts they like and not touch the remaining food on the plate. it is no problem for them to waste money bc they have a lot more

anyways, i have 2 more hours here in economy. i am going to go to my happy place now to make it through this difficult time. funnily, my happy place is just 5 rows in front of me…
