The Primary Maths department at @BSAKAbuDhabi, one of the most established & prestigious schools in the Middle East, with 1,900 students aged from 3 - 18 years.
I've spent time this year using both @EducEndowFoundn & @rs_network guidance to support the use of manipulatives in key stage 1 & 2. We have seen how making understanding concrete is equipping children with strategies beyond calculating and into problem-solvers. @gareth_metcalfe
Year 2 were able to make connections between their multiples of 5, halve amounts and time this week. Hearing their 'sense-making' conversations and mathematical thinking was a wonderful way to develop a deeper understanding of telling the time. @BSAKyear2
โ Checking for Understanding (CFU) makes the invisible visible. ๐๏ธ Scaffolding builds students up, not down. These two new guides break down essential moves at the heart of great responsive teaching.

Seeing and holding those mathematical structures is such a vital part in helping children understand concepts that underpin abstract numerical values. @gareth_metcalfe ๐
โManipulatives can be so powerful in helping to bring to life the key thought processes in problem-solving.โ
@gareth_metcalfe of I See Maths, explores the evolving role of manipulatives in Key Stage 2 maths.

@BSAKyear4 exploring area using squares today. We linked our learning on 'working systematically from @nrichmaths to our learning on area @WhiteRoseEd to find all the possible solutions for shapes with an area of 5 squares. @BSAKprimMaths
@BSAKyear4 creating some multiples of 3 number tracks, so we can make the connection between repeated addition and multiplication and count in jumps of 3 to get us started. @WhiteRoseEd@BSAKprimMaths
@BSAKyear5 exploring multiples and common multiples using venn diagrams. Later in the week, they applied this tool independently and noticed they could use it for sorting the buildings! #BSAKProblemSolvingSchool
@BSAKyear5 Working systematically on today's @nrichmaths problem. They made connections to the learning from earlier in the week and worked on noticing even numbers, multiples of 3 and 5 before working sytematically to find a solution. @BSAKprimary#BSAKProblemSolvingSchool

Visual representations to demonstrate the ideas of balance and equivalence, are excellent in supporting conceptual understanding. @BSAKyear5@BSAKyear6@BSAKpriAsstHead
Do you know how to change the values of variables on the balance scale? Watch this Polypad Pointer video to learn how to use the scale with algebra tiles, polygons, dice and even imported images! https://t.co/ZiJFfRoqpa
A great way to consider those inverse operations with addition and subtraction, reason about children's number knowledge and a great way to encourage mathematical discussions. @BSAKyear4@BSAKyear5@bsakyear6
These visual areas, help children make so many connections with area, multiplication and division. See the Maths, so I can do the Maths. @BSAKyear4@BSAKyear3
