in about 2011 I was volunteering as an appropriate adult. I don't think that I was aware then of the rape gangs. On 2 separate weeks I was called to the police station to sit in on interviews with an 11 year old girl. She was in care and was very disturbed . On both occasions I sat talking with her in an interview room so that she would not have to be locked in a cell while awaiting the police interview, solicitor etc. It became obvious to me that she was involved with a gang of much older men, one of whom she called her boyfriend. I was very concerned about her, reported it to the solicitor and the desk sergeant and was told by the solicitor that it was not my remit to get involved to which I politely told him to FO and the harassed desk sergeant asked me what he should/could do about it. I told them both that I would write in detail my concerns in my report, including the fact that I had reported it to them.
The next day the world came down on my head and the message was conveyed to me that I had stepped outside my remit and I was not "qualified " to make that assessment. My response was that IMO the girl was in danger, I was not going to retract my report and what they did with it was up to them but I stood by every word.
I heard later that the girl was moved to more secure care.
I was retired, a volunteer with decades of experience of working with health and social care. I was not dependant on the people that were trying to shut me up in any way. So I could easily stand my ground but when you are a small cog in a system that is corrupt from the very top and whose job depends on those same corrupt people its not easy.
Any inquiry needs to target the right people. The local MPs council leaders , police chiefs and senior managers.
