Managed to get Year 7 in the workshops to make a wooden spatula before the end of term. The first time in the workshops for these boys, and the first time this year for the DT teachers too!
Robert Harris undertaking the last hive inspection of the term. He and I are going to continue with inspections throughout the summer break. Colonies are all growing, so there should be honey for Autumn.
Honey safely delivered to @UrbanOutreachUK so it can be distributed to families in need. Well done @BoltonSchool bees, that was the last of our stock. Hives are now working hard on this year’s crop!
Robert Harris 13f with another ten jars of Bolton School Honey ready for delivery to #UrbanOutreachUK. Photographed after almost two hours of hive inspections. Some of the colonies are monsters with almost 60000 individuals. There are now eleven, after the swarm last weekend!
Bees finally out of the tree. You can see about a quarter of them in this photograph. The swarm weighed over four and a half kilos! They eventually made their way into the box and all is good again.
This might look like a bucket on a pole, but beekeepers call it a crown. I hope to get the bees into it by shaking them off the bow. I should then be able to tip them into nucleus box. Fingers crossed.
Bees have finally decided that social distancing is not for them, to be fair they are all from the same “household”. One very large swarm. Going to have to get creative if I want to get about 50000 bees into a polystyrene box.
Boltonschool Bees defy lockdown. One hive has produced two swarms! At least it appears they are observing Social Distancing rules, and are clustering just over two meters apart!
Rotary Schools Tecnology Tournment running at school today. Welcome to Canon Slade, Westhoughton, Rivington & Blackrod. Challenge to flash a beacon on top of a tower. Much innovative thinking.
