Bury St Edmunds is fast becoming the UK Bitcoin hub!
Local businesses in Bury accepted Bitcoin payments, and the historic Guildhall hosted debates plus a pop up sats market.
Great to see grassroots adoption actively sponsored by @bitcoinhodlco. Their CEO @FreddieNew shared his thoughts on his first visit to the town with Suffolk News.
“The BSEBTC event itself ran like clockwork and struck a lovely balance between celebrating the town and discussing wider issues around saving and spending with Bitcoin.”
Bitcoin Policy UK Director Susie Violet Ward shared her perspective on the social impact:
“People can feel that the world is changing economically, politically and socially, and that’s why interest in Bitcoin and freedom technology is growing. Events like this matter because education, community and open discussion are going to be incredibly important in the years ahead.”
Thank you to the @BSEBTC for delivering a fabulous event.

What a day at @BSEBTC Pizza Day 🍕⚡(1st event of 2026)
Honestly, we didn’t know what to expect going in… but it absolutely smashed our expectations and then some.
Huge appreciation to everyone who came along, played BTC: Proof of Play, chatted with us, supported us and just made the entire day feel special. Bury St Edmunds is such an amazing place too - loads of history, brilliant atmosphere, and genuinely so many varied independent shops and businesses accepting Bitcoin. You love to see it.
One highlight (for everyone except me) was me somehow choking mid conversation and accidentally causing a full blown latte volcano over several innocent bystanders ☕🌋😂 I think I’ve now permanently earned the nickname “Latte Volcano”.
The response to the game was incredible. People were just picking it up naturally and getting into matches almost instantly which was honestly really reassuring for us. Seeing people understand the mechanics quickly and actually have fun with it was a massive moment.
Special shoutout to Hacky who popped by and was unbelievably enthusiastic about what we’re building. You could tell the interest was genuine and that really means a lot when you’ve been grinding away building in the open for so long.
Also finally meeting Degreelessness IRL after years of mutually following each other online was awesome 😂 Really great to meet you and your wife mate - and genuinely appreciate all the support over the years. Good luck with the next few weeks 😉🤝
Meeting Freddie “Swol” New finally was brilliant too 💪 Such a pleasure mate. Honestly one of the best things about the entire event was just how grounded and welcoming everyone was.
Huge thanks as well to Suzie for sitting with me and allowing me to absolutely chew her ear off about the game for ages 😂 Appreciate the genuine interest and conversation more than you know.
And Duncan from @TheSoloMiningCo - what a ridiculously small world! 🍻 Definitely need to hit you up for a beer properly next time and potentially chat about a fun little side quest involving the arcade idea 👀
The vendors market was packed all day with loads of people coming through constantly. We even had several mums scanning the QR code for their kids to download the game afterwards 👀 Potential future players inbound!
Even more surreal - several Guildhall committee members sat with us for well over 45 minutes playing the game, asking questions and genuinely engaging with what we’re building. That honestly meant a lot.
Massive shoutout as well to the Biltong vendor directly next to us - what an absolutely lovely gent. Top tier munch too 😂🥩
The pizza was incredible… although it was so busy we ended up eating most of ours cold by the time we got chance 😅
Massive credit to the organisers as well. Seriously well run event, great people, great atmosphere and everything felt really thoughtfully put together from start to finish.

Bitcoin Pizza Day Event 🍕
Had a very enjoyable day and evening in Bury St Edmunds, arranged by @BSEBTC
Paying in Bitcoin at the pub, cafe and restaurant.
Discussing whether Bitcoin is a better store of value or medium of exchange?
It’s fair to see there are different opinions. I’m a bit on the fence as I’d like to see it become both in time.
Although Bitcoin is in its 17th year we are still definitely early and adoption is still growing,
always good fun mixing with fellow Bitcoiners like @DecentraSuze@freddienew
What is your take on Bitcoin?

Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!
On this day in 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz made history by sending 10,000 BTC for two pizzas.
This was the first real world Bitcoin transaction. What started as a pizza order became the moment Bitcoin proved its power as peer-to-peer money.
Today, the UK Bitcoin community is celebrating in style at The Pizza Day Thing in Bury St Edmunds, with artisan pizza, free bar, panel discussions, Lightning demos and local vendors accepting sats at the historic Guildhall.
A huge thanks to @BSEBTC for putting on such a brilliant event.

Hopefully see you in Bury!!
16 years ago today, a guy paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas. 🍕
At today's price that's ~£578,000,000. The most expensive takeaway in history.
But Laszlo's the reason Bitcoin became money Someone had to spend it first.
Don't feel sorry for him. Thank him.
Happy Pizza Day. #Bitcoin #PizzaDay
