Happy Juneteenth! Today in 1865, 2 years after the Emancipation proclamation, slaves in Texas were notified by union soldiers they were indeed free! Juneteenth is not yet recognized as a national holiday, but multiple cities have provided ways for people to celebrate!

Today, we celebrate James Baldwin. He articulated what it feels like to be black and was an extraordinary writer, playwright and leader in black history. He IS black history!

Today we celebrate Hattie McDaniel. Hattie was the first African American to win an academy award. She won the Best Supporting Actress category in 1939 for Gone with the Wind.

Today we celebrate Wilhelmina Ruth Delco the first African American elected public official in Austin, also inducted into the Texas women’s hall of fame in 1986. She IS Black History.

Today we celebrate Toni Morrison an American novelist,editor,and professor emeritus.Morrison won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award in 1988 for her acclaimed book Beloved and was also awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. She IS Black History.

Today we Celebrate Jean-Michel Basquiat an American artist known for his informal graffiti in Manhattan in the late 70s featuring social commentary on systems of oppression.He IS Black History. @DragonNationRR

Today we celebrate Dorothy Johnson Vaughan a mathematical pioneer for NASA working to launch the first American satellites into space after NASA had desegregated. She was also recognized in the 2016 movie “Hidden Figures” She is Black History. @DragonNationRR

Today we celebrate Thomas Mundy Peterson,
popularly known for being the first African American to vote after the passage of the 15th amendment, his vote was cast on March 31st 1870. He IS Black History. @DragonNationRR

Today we celebrate Eunice Kathleen Waymon.She was an African American, singer, songwriter,and activist in the civil rights movement. Throughout her musical career, she used her unique voice to promote equity and portray her story as a black woman in America. She IS Black History

Today we celebrate Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. It is the first institution of higher education founded for African-Americans. It paved the way for the 104 other historically Black colleges, which have produced distinguished alums like Oprah,and many more. @DragonNationRR

Today we celebrate Ella Fitzgerald. She was an American jazz singer. She was known as the First Lady of Song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. She IS Black History. @DragonNationRR
