What I’ve learned after going to garage sales the past year
- be there 15 minutes before the scheduled start time
- gauge tone of the seller. Laid back = offer less. Organized/prompt = closer to sticker price
Mini 🧵
eBay buyer conversation:
Want to buy at 40% off
Want me to reduce shipping
I explained that is the USPS cost to ship; I don’t include my packaging in that
Messaged week later but offered to pay full shipping
messaged today says need shipped today; lowest I’ll take?
Lol
@AustindudeE Seems like each ‘region’ of Goodwills has their own Amazon and eBay stores now. Plus the online Goodwill store selling stuff.
I’m sure varies by region/area.
Not just Goodwill, others too.
@TheUsedBookGuy Listed a book today… had some old press clippings, and $3 in store credit for Marlboro Book store in New York, NY. Not sure what year it’s from, but definitely more than a couple decades.
Book was from 1960
Just listed a 1927 Oscar Wilde book that had pages 2-363 hollowed out to store something. The pages hollowed were glued together. Had no idea what to list it as
@TheUsedBookGuy
@TheUsedBookGuy Lol yep.
I know you keep looking for that. Lol
I’ve gotten a $5 and $20 bill, and a $5 Applebees gift card in various books. Lucky.
The idea of a 1927 book being hollowed out to keep something hidden is kinda cool
Stopped at Goodwill. Stand alone store with its own parking lot. Not a bin store
34 cars in the lot
Had 3 new sealed board games 7.99 - $9.99 each. New sealed CDs 3.99 -4.99 each. Used ones for both a lot less. Pricing out resellers
No wonder they still sitting there w crowd
@SMBJordan @AlexLathery The better ones don’t need to look for work. They are either booked up; on their own, or can name their rate from multiple people like yourself.
When I call one and they available that week… it’s a bad sign.
Been ignoring my pile of unlisted stuff. Told myself no more sourcing til I list a ton. (Part time seller here)
Listed like 30 CDs this morning on Amazon- should sell for $350+ minus fees.
Started working on my pile of unlisted stuff.
The Upanishads translated by F Max Muller, Sacred Books of the East Part 1
From 1910.
Seen some comps for versions in 1920’s or 30’s near $100.
I emailed a few online rare book sellers. eBay not best place to sell this one
Was in the ‘free bin’ at a rummage sale. Excellent condition, 1894
I was 50 people back in line, shopped, saw the bin as I was leaving, loaded my car first a few blocks away, then came back and got a few items from free bin
At least 100+ people walked past over 20+ minutes
@SwapFBA @JHartFlips It’s back in stock. Albeit with some gaps coming after most distributors blow thru their first shipment out to store.
If you still have some, move it quickly.
