A thousand light-years away, in the star-forming region IC 348, Webb has picked out objects that barely qualify as stars. Among the young suns, its infrared vision found brown dwarfs—some only about twice the mass of Jupiter—failed stars too light to sustain the fusion that powers true stars, yet still glowing with the heat of their formation.
Around them, the cluster is not quiet. Young stars drive powerful jets that slam into the surrounding gas and dust, carving bright shocks into the cloud that made them. IC 348 is close enough, and Webb sharp enough, that both the smallest objects and the violence of their birth can be seen in the same frame.
