Protest that no one can see or hear isn’t a protest.
Under Art. 21 ICCPR, the UN Human Rights Committee (General Comment 37, paras 22 & 55) says peaceful assemblies should be held “within sight and sound of their target audience” and must not be “relegated to remote areas”.
In late 1988, a quiet, brilliant academic finishing a teaching assignment in London School of Economics (LSE) joined a group of peace activists with a radical plan. It was an unlikely beginning for a man who would help change how India fought poverty. A Thread. 1/17
Draconian restrictions. A crush of troops. Detentions taking place far away from the designated zone.
My take on the dubious legal basis of today’s crackdown in Delhi.
Border Security Force (BSF) personnel carried Beretta MX4 submachine guns and INSAS rifles near Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on October 10.

The only thing that rare judges like Atul Sreedharan have, and most Indian judges lack, is a spine. The Constitution can guarantee all the powers, protections, and privileges, but a judge has to be born with a spine and a commitment to rule of law
UP CEO admits to accepting 16.18 lakh voter applications for addition before draft list was finalised. Falsely blames ECI instructions for hiding the details. We reveal the internal ECI instructions.

A pregnant woman from a marginalised community gave birth outside a hospital after allegedly being denied admission.
Any society reveals itself at the hospital gate, where the vulnerable seek mercy.
So what does it say about us?
Supreme Court, while noting irregularities in an investigation, remarked that it might as well disband the UP Police and direct the CBI to take over all probes in the State.
First reaction from Lucknow's Hazratganj SHO Vikram Singh.
Due credits to @RitikaChopra__ , @DaminiNath and @IndianExpress, if it weren’t for them, CEC Gyanesh Kumar would have bulldozed his way in the multi-member ECI.
Almost all the objections raised by the two ECs, SS Sandhu and Vivek Joshi have been accepted by CEC Gyanesh Kumar including Form 6, functioning of ECINET and work allocation.
This is the strength of journalism and the beauty of democracy.
Always a good time to recall that when SIR was taken to court, the SC first allowed it to become fait accompli by delaying hearings, and then sanctified it.

This is exactly what happened in the Delhi Govt vs Union of India case. 5-judge bench issued a ruling, 2-judge bench differed over its interpretation, referred it to another 5-judge bench to clarify. This took 8 years, while status quo stayed. See: https://t.co/LcaRSKZ3Nm
#BREAKING Supreme Court says its ruling in Bijoe Emmanuel protecting the right of a conscientious objector not to sing the National Anthem continues to be the law of the land, while hearing TM Krishna's challenge concerning Vande Mataram.
Justice Joymalya Bagchi: "We would expect that the law of the land, as declared by this Court in Bijoe Emmanuel, will govern the act of the statute. The declaration of law in Bijoe Emmanuel has till now not been questioned."
Justice Bagchi further indicated that a conscientious objector who does not recite one or all stanzas of Vande Mataram should not face criminal prosecution.
"That is, for a conscientious objector, not to recite one or all the stanzas of the national song is not going to subject himself to criminal prosecution," Justice Bagchi observed.
Senior Advocate Dr S Muralidhar stressed that the amended law is a penal statute and argued that its scope must therefore be clear, particularly when criminal consequences are involved.
The Court asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to take the paper book and directed that the Centre's response be furnished within two weeks.

Lest it be forgotten. Hans Raj College had made a cowshed on land designated for a girls’ hostel:
