If it HAD to be changed, I would propose the following. An injured player must remain on the sideline until any of the following happen:

- the opposing team substitutes
- either team calls a timeout
- there is a change of possession
- the opposing team has a stoppage for injury

Here's an interesting discussion point in Charlotte at the AFCA convention to slow feigning injuries: Any injured player would be sidelined the rest of the drive. Coaches could use a timeout to reinstate player.
