College athletics has changed since I entered player development in 2016.

But 7 "old school" strategies still work:

Relationships
Planning
Communication
Check-ins
Listening
Presence
Campus connections

The game changed. The fundamentals didn't.

What's #8?

Athlete trust is built in the small moments.

Are you present where they are?
Can they count on you?
Do you show up consistently?

Players notice. Make sure your actions give them a reason to trust you.

Most programs educate athletes.

Very few are intentional about what they're teaching.

That's where player development changes everything.

Here's why education is one of the most important pillars of the BEYOND Framework. 🧵

[Edward Jones II @Ed_Jones2]

"We'd have a better player development program if we had more resources."

I hear this all the time.

The truth?

Resources help.

Intentionality changes everything. 🧵

When an athlete refuses to perform, he was presented a stark choice: return home or change his ways.

This tough love approach forced a confrontation with his actions and the future he wanted. #AthleteMindset #Coaching #Discipline

The biggest misconception about player development?

PLUS vs. AND.

Average programs say:
"We have football... plus player development."

Great programs say:
"We have football, and player development."

One word changes the culture.

Why do programs need player development?

3 reasons:

Enhance the athlete experience
Develop athletes beyond competition
Create value for the program

Player development isn't an extra. It's a value add.
