Recently, I sat down with @ryanwhitney6 on #BettingTheLimit. We discussed his experience being surrounded by legendary veteran players as a rookie in Pittsburg and the tremendous impact it had on launching his career.
The implementation of the salary cap has changed the dynamics of the locker room in terms of being able to load up on veterans. As a result, the GM’s ability to balance the number of veteran and young players is more important than ever.
The biggest mistake teams make is having a false sense of how close they are to being legitimate contenders.
Teams who are “building” should focus more on quality than quantity with veteran players. You don’t want to block the development of younger prospects, but in the same regard, these young stars must be surrounded by a small group of elite veterans who will create the future culture. Tyler Toffoli, is the perfect example of this and was a great signing by San Jose.
Meanwhile, for teams who are actually contenders, I have no idea why they hold on to mid-round draft picks like they are Bitcoin. The average third-round pick only has a 20% chance of playing 200 games in the NHL. If you have a chance to win, why not fire away?
Just my thoughts…😀
My main takeaways from Season 1 of #BettingTheLimit:
1. Athletes who find their next passion quickly, have an easier time with the stability of their mental health
2. Athletes must find a way to generate the same type of income, actively or passively, because it’s impossible to scale back the lifestyle they created
3. Athletes should compete in business and other sports. Nothing will replicate the euphoric high of athletics, but being competitive in business will help drive success
4. Athletes should continue to train hard. It’s important to keep both the mind and body sharp.
5. Athletes should use their platform to get into rooms that they normally wouldn’t be able to access. Surround yourself with positive and encouraging people.
