After decades (74 years) of extreme suppression, Dalits flipped Bengal. That is why the regime-change gang is crying foul over alleged vote chori.
How did the BJP win Bengal?
When Mamata Banerjee first became Chief Minister in 2011, the BJP had only 4.06% of the vote in the Bengal Assembly election. That was nearly two percentage points below the 6% vote-share threshold under the applicable state-party recognition criteria, and the BJP won zero Assembly seats. Although it was a National Party.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Narendra Modi was the BJP's prime ministerial candidate. The BJP won a thumping majority nationally, and Modi became Prime Minister. Yet Bengal remained a distant dream for the BJP.
The BJP tried hard to win Bengal in the 2016 Assembly election, after two years of Modi's leadership, but could barely secure 10.16% of the vote.
The BJP again won a thumping majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. However, Bengal remained an uphill battle, even though it was the home state of the BJP's (Jan Sangh) founder, Syama Prasad Mukherjee, former President of the Maha Bodhi Society of India (1942–1953).
Then came the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December 2019. The BJP sought to bring Dalits to its side, and the CAA had already been enacted, which could benefit some Dalit refugees.
In March 2021, Modi visited Bangladesh and went to Orakandi, the birthplace of Harichand Thakur, the revered spiritual leader of the Matua community. The Matuas are predominantly Namasudras, a historically very strong Dalit community with a significant presence in West Bengal and Bangladesh. They revere Harichand Thakur as a central spiritual figure in their community, just as Ambedkar is revered as the greatest hero of their community.
Mamata Banerjee fiercely opposed the CAA amid Muslim protests, while the BJP sought to consolidate support among the Matua community and other sections of Dalit refugees.
In the 2021 Assembly election, the BJP's vote share surged from 10.16% in 2016 to 37.97%. Dalit support became a major factor in Bengal's changing political landscape. Scheduled Castes constitute 23.5% of Bengal's population according to the 2011 Census, but their actual share is 28%. Scheduled Tribes account for another 5.8%.
The COVID-19 pandemic also imposed limitations on election campaigning.
In 2026, the BJP again sought to consolidate Dalit and Adivasi support and won the Bengal Assembly election with a thumping majority, securing 207 out of 293 seats with 45.84% of the vote. This was a historic victory for the BJP
That is why reducing the BJP's victory to vote chori is misleading. The BJP's rise in Bengal did not happen overnight. Its vote share increased from 4.06% in 2011 to 10.16% in 2016 and 37.97% in 2021, before the party won the 2026 Assembly election.
The BJP's electoral rise reflects years of political mobilisation and its efforts to build support among Dalits and Dalit refugees communities.
Ideally, the BJP should have nominated a Dalit Chief Minister to recognise the contribution of Dalit voters to this political transformation.
For the first time since Independence and Partition, Dalit voters have emerged as a decisive force in Bengal's political transformation. Those who dismiss this shift by reducing the result to allegations of vote chori are ignoring the political agency of Dalit voters.
Dalits have the power to change political history. Their votes cannot be dismissed simply because the outcome does not suit the regime-change gang.
There is no justification for alleging vote chori in Bengal. Respect the voters. Respect their mandate.

A deep state, through Dipke, seeks to reintroduce Gandhi into the mainstream. On returning to India, he displayed Ambedkar’s image, promising to follow Ambedkar. He succeeded in the first CJP protest, though some later smuggled Gandhi back. Now he seeks to restore Gandhi to push India into deeper anarchy. This cannot be allowed. He must be booked under the NSA.
If your definition of equality begins only when bahujans demand representation, you do not understand equality. You only understand your privilege should remain unchallanged.
Reservation is about representation.
One who opposes SC, ST, OBC reservation is against India. It ensures fair representation in universities, offices and other institutions, making our country more inclusive and just.
A transparent fair system of exam and whole standard process from application to interview to joining for contractual to permanent must form for both private and government public sector.
Dalits must stay focused on a few demands.
1. Implementation of Rohit Vemula Act
2. UGC equity guidelines
3. Representation in academia, bureaucracy, legal domain
4.Abolition of collegium system
5.Curbing increasing violence against Dalits
6. Save reservation and atrocities act
7. Implementation of reservation in private sector.
8. Prevention of caste discrimination
Democracy savers are seasonal. None of them will ever raise Dalit problems.
