I spoke to a grandmother today worried about her 21-year-old grandson who's aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. He’s lost 20-25 pounds and is struggling with depression. And so-called leaders like Pete Hegseth aren’t doing a thing about it.

As a Navy veteran who served aboard both carriers and submarines, I can tell you that life at sea isn't always easy—especially toward the end of a long deployment. But that's part of what we signed up for.

I'm getting tired of hearing stories portraying our sailors as victims because conditions aboard ship are difficult. Much of the complaining seems to come from a handful of disgruntled sailors, amplified by families back home and a news media eager for a negative story.

One sailor reportedly complained, "We haven't had milk in months." Come on. Anyone who's spent time at sea knows the drill: powdered milk, powdered eggs, and those infamous "death pillows"—ravioli. Nobody promised you the Marriott.

Meanwhile, thousands of dedicated sailors are quietly doing their jobs under arduous conditions during one of the longest deployments in recent Navy history. To them, I offer a heartfelt Bravo Zulu. You've earned our respect.

And to those who spend their time complaining: suck it up and do your job. What Lincoln and her task force are accomplishing at sea may mean fewer Marines have to go ashore, crawl through the sand, and dodge bullets.

That's what military service is about: doing a difficult job so somebody else may not have to.
