Clint Eastwood explains why he chose "Play Misty for Me" (1971) as his directorial debut:

"Eastwood: It was the subject. I had lived through a similar experience, though it was less dramatic. The character played by Jessica Walter, which was suggested to Jo Heims by an acquaintance of hers, was also familiar to me. It’s someone who fantasizes a love relationship. For my character, the disc jockey, it’s a one-night stand, but for her it’s a devouring passion. This misunderstanding interested me: exactly when do you become involved in a love affair? To what extent are we responsible for the relationship we establish?

Interviewer: Weren’t the people you were talking to at Universal surprised that you chose a story in which the dominant character is a woman?

Eastwood: Yeah, sure. They kept asking me, “Why are you so eager to make a picture where the woman has the best part?” Their second argument was that the situation wouldn’t be believable: “How could a big strong guy like you be threatened physically by a weak young woman?” I thought, on the contrary, that the obsessive dimension of the relationship would only make the dynamic between the two more interesting and would actually work out better. Besides, it is a type of behavior that you can observe in either sex. I’ve known men who were as possessive as women about the object of their passion."

@PAHoyeck @dmdebruijn It’s an astounding masterpiece that captures the essence and spirit of a great genius and even makes his philosophical work accessible for all of us, who can’t really understand it.
But above all, it’s a really funny book that contains some of the best lines in all biographies.

Die kwartfinale van 94 was een geflatteerd beeld tegen de latere winnaar. Wij hadden in die finale moeten staan!
