@endozduopoly I was in high school in 1988 but I remember the Howard controversy well. Some of the other stuff I had to go onto Trove to look at old newspaper clippings
I don’t remember Hayden saying what he did in 1983 or Hawke saying what he did in 1993.
@endozduopoly He got absolutely hammered for his very innocuous remarks in 1988 & got rolled by Peacock a few months later.
When he regained the leadership in 1995 he felt compelled to disavow his earlier comments.
I can remember what Australia was like when we hit 18 million in 1995.
We seemed to have plenty of people back then.
I don’t remember thinking: “This country is so boring & dysfunctional - we need to import millions of additional foreigners to make it a decent place to live.”
@GreenTyler27 Are we better off at 28m than we were at 24m or 20m?
Will we be better off at 32m or 36m?
Our leaders boost our population with immigration to boost the GDP numbers, but they never ask if it makes us better off

The ABS estimates that Australia’s population reached 28m today.

@arnsuperstar@therealrukshan Sure - because skin colour correlates with culture to a large degree. Also, assimilation is largely driven by exogamy. Most people prefer to marry within their own race, so it’s likely that this driver of assimilation is much weaker as the composition of our intake has changed.
@CupittMatthew@DrewPavlou@samstrades You are all over the place.
There may be “some nuance” about the right level & it’s “totally fine” to have “sensible discussions” but if a political party proposes a 130k cap on arrivals then it’s “far right” because that’s “based on not wanting migrants”.
@Ryan26Mr@DrewPavlou@samstrades You people always justify what one of the major parties does with reference to what the other one does.
Pathetic.
People support One Nation because we are fed up with both major parties.
It’s not true that “it was way higher under liberals”. But it was also extreme under them.
