@AnalysisFact That depends on your definition of beauty, but certainly it's false if you limit it to the things Hardy liked. Important math is sometimes beautiful, especially to those who really understand it, but not always. Sometimes important results are just kind of messy and ugly
Humans hesitate to simply iterate when they don't feel capable of solving a problem.
But programming is an iterative mindset.
You can't just scroll your way to programming.
There are genuine hours of deep work.
Don't be scared of the deep problem.
"at least 25% of all science done in the last few years has used numpy and scipy" - Travis Oliphant
I can only dream of having that kind of impact. Amazing.
Freat time at the BYU Applied and Comput'n'l Math @byuacme 10th anniversary gala tonight. Legend @teoliphant was the keynote. I was co-PI on the 1st NSF grant for curriculum with founders @JeffHumpherys + @tj_jarvis. Proud to be referred to as ACME faculty after all these years.
@RickEcon@byuacme@JeffHumpherys@tj_jarvis This was an amazing event. The ACME program is visionary and exactly what I would love to see. It is the program I encourage all my STEM students to look at first.
@algorithmachine "Things you will use" and "train to think critically..." are not mutually exclusive. So why not spend our time on the things that do both? #FoundationsOfAppliedMath
@algorithmachine The late college years also need re-imagining! Let's teach math that's actually useful, and do it in a way that helps students learn to think critically and solve hard problems. #FoundationsOfAppliedMath@byuacme
Bellman optimality is foundational to dynamic optimization: If the shortest route from Salt Lake City to Flagstaff passes through Kanab, then the first half of that route is the shortest path from SLC to Kanab #FoundationsOfAppliedMath#TheMathYouNeed https://t.co/sqaDLtoR0U

@tj_jarvis@byuacme Which has been amazing. I feel well equipped to solve essentially any business problem. I might use ML, or I might not, but ACME definitely set me up well.
