In 1253, after five years of sickness from a debilitating paralytic disease, Fina de Ciardi, a 13 year old girl died in San Gimignano, a walled medieval hamlet in the hills of Tuscany. Fina eschewed a bed and instead spent her illness on a wooden board, reportedly leaving home only to attend Mass.

Despite her illness and the death of her parents, Fina was said never to complain and to alway present a joyful countenance and give thanks to God. Beloved by the townspeople for her grace and piety, she was venerated by the Pope for miraculous healings.

Fina claimed to have received a vision of St. Gregory, wherein he foretold her death on March 12, 1253, which was the day she died. Fragrant white flowers were said to be found blooming on the board beneath Fina’s body when it was removed for burial.

A chapel to her memory, Cappella di Santa Fina, is nestled in a corner of Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, the cathedral atop San Gimignano.

If you visit, be sure to wear long pants or the church attendants will insist that you wear one of the long skirts they keep on hand for rubes.
