How gorgeous are these Hitchin girls! Unfortunately, we do not have a date for this picture but, judging by their clothes, we can guess it was taken some time in the 20th century.
Do you know something else?
Let’s treasure and rediscover the history of our community together!
Let’s give a big hand to our Museum Assistants, Christian and Lauren, who received their Certificates of Achievement this week.
Lauren and Christian have been such a positive and creative presence in the Museum these last six months!
Thank you for all your hard work with us.
A very Merry Christmas from everyone at the British Schools Museum 🙏
We hope you got lots of lovely Christmas cards 🎄📮🎄

A fascinating spyglass in our collection belonged to G.W.P., whose initials are written in ink on its lid, together with the date 17th May 1879.
Who was GWP? What might she/he have seen through here in 1879?

Here are some gloves from our collection, a crucial accessory for Victorian women!
For wealthy ladies, gloves were a symbol of high status and a protection against the spread of germs. For working class women, they were also used to conceal social status.

Look at this Victorian top hat from our #collection An urban myth claims that it caused a riot when it was first worn, before becoming a must-have for respectable men throughout the #19thcentury.
What do you associate it with today? #Magicians or the #nobility? Let us know!

This self-teaching tablet was designed to help children visualise numbers.
Of course, today’s children use very different tablets to learn.
Victorian parents definitely didn’t need to limit their children’s screen time!
