Commissioner @MahamuudMoallim opened a national simulation exercise in Mogadishu to test Somalia’s El Niño 2026 preparedness and capacity to respond to flash and Juba-Shabelle river flooding.

Organised by SoDMA with @WFPSomalia, the exercise brings together Federal Government, Federal Member States, UN and other humanitarian partners to test early warning, risk information, coordination and early action.

The exercise focuses on turning forecasts into timely decisions and action, identifying coordination and information-sharing gaps, and mobilising support to reduce flood impacts and protect vulnerable communities.

Commissioner @MahamuudMoallim stressed that Somalia has made progress in early warning systems, but the priority is turning warnings into rapid decisions and early action that protect lives and livelihoods.

Commissioner @MahamuudMoallim today launched the IMPAACT Project in Mogadishu, an initiative focused on strengthening early warning systems, risk forecasting and anticipatory action to reduce the impact of disasters.

The launch brought together representatives from @ECHO_CESAfrica, @IGAD_CPAC, @ACFsomaliaCD, @SCAP_Somalia, the Federal Government of Somalia, and humanitarian and development partners.

Commissioner @MahamuudMoallim highlighted the continued risks facing Somalia, including drought, floods, displacement, food insecurity and climate change, stressing the need to move beyond responding to disasters toward anticipating risks and taking action before impacts worsen.

He reaffirmed SoDMA’s commitment to leading, guiding and coordinating the project to strengthen national capacity and ensure risk information, early warnings and forecasts are effectively used to protect vulnerable communities and their livelihoods.

BREAKING: Somalia has strongly rejected Ethiopia’s ‘Memorundum of Understanding’ with Somaliland, says the deal is “null and void”, and has no legal basis.

The Somali government says Ethiopia’s move is a “naked aggression” that violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia.

Following a cabinet meeting in Mogadishu on Tuesday, Somalia says Ethiopia’s actions threatens good neighbourliness and peace and stability in the region.

Somalia has summoned its ambassador to Addis Ababa for consultations, and urged the UN Security Council and the African Union to convene an emergency meeting on Ethiopia’s actions.

Somalia urged the UNSC, AU, Arab League, OIC and regional organisations to support Somalia defend its territorial integrity and pressure Ethiopia to return to international norms.
