The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), #SadarHills, has condemned the reported attack on Lhungjang village in #Kangpokpi district and called on the Centre and the #Manipur government to take steps to prevent further escalation of tensions in the region.
In a statement issued on September 7, CoTU alleged that the village was attacked by armed cadres of banned outfits.
#Manipur: Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on September 7 said the state government has not declared village volunteers in the hills and valley or the #Meitei group #ArambaiTenggol as banned organisations, and police have not registered cases against individuals merely because of their affiliation with these groups.
Participating in a short-duration discussion moved by Opposition MLA K Ranjit Singh in the Assembly, Khemchand said the unprecedented violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, had compelled many youths to take up arms.

#Manipur: Security forces conducted a joint operation at Gampum village under Saikul Police Station in #Kangpokpi district on September 7, during which an unauthorised camp allegedly belonging to the suspected #Kuki Liberation Army (KLA) was raided.
The operation was jointly carried out by personnel from #ManipurPolice, CoBRA, CRPF, Mahila personnel and the Rapid Action Force (RAF).
According to the security forces, eight suspected cadres were apprehended during the operation. The forces also recovered seven automatic weapons from the camp.

In a letter to Gupta dated September 8, Khemchand said the 54-year-old musician, who belonged to the Meitei community, was allegedly assaulted in the early hours of September 7 outside his residence in Kilokari Village after he objected to disorderly conduct, shouting and public consumption of alcohol.

Sarda Devi met Vikram’s grieving parents, 96-year-old Chongtham Birendrakumar, a retired veterinary doctor, and his 86-year-old mother, Chongtham Ongbi Kamala.
Kamala was a well-known singer in Manipur and also served as a senior announcer with All India Radio.

The mother of deceased Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram said she had often read and cried over reports of people from the Northeast being killed or assaulted in mainland India, but never imagined that her own son would become a victim of such violence.
“I really feel sad. I don't know how to express it. I am very upset. I always read news about Northeast people being killed in mainland India. I will say it is a cowardly and inhuman act. I read news about the killing and assault of Northeast people, and today the news is about my own son,” Vikram’s mother, Chongtham Ongbi Kamala, said.

#Manipur: A candlelight vigil was held at the Western Gate of #Kangla in #Imphal on September 8 in memory of Manipuri #guitarist Chongtham Vikram, who allegedly died after being assaulted in Delhi.
The vigil was organised by the Thangmeiband United Club (TUC), with people from different sections of society gathering to pay tribute to the musician and seek justice for his family.

A suspected hand grenade exploded near the gate of Congress MLA Keisham Meghachandra Singh’s residence at Bishnunaha in Yairipok, Thoubal district, on Thursday evening, September 3, police said. The blast occurred at around 8.15 pm when an unidentified person allegedly hurled the explosive at the residence of the Congress leader. No casualties were reported in the incident. The identity of the attacker and the motive behind the attack are yet to be established. Police personnel immediately reached the spot following the blast and launched a search operation in and around the area. Further investigation is underway and more details are awaited.

In a major crackdown on illegal arms circulation, joint security forces recovered a massive cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives during coordinated overnight operations in Manipur's hill districts.
The intelligence-led operations were conducted between midnight of July 3 and the morning of July 4 across Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi, Chandel and Churachandpur districts.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Director General of Police, Manipur, the operations were carried out jointly by Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, the Indian Army, and other Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs). The raids followed specific intelligence inputs regarding the presence of warlike materials in interior forested locations.
Security forces recovered 203 firearms of various calibres and a significant quantity of ammunition and explosives. Among the weapons seized were 21 INSAS rifles, 11 AK-series rifles, 26 self-loading rifles (SLRs), 2 sniper rifles, 3 carbines, 17 .303 rifles, 2 mortars, 3 M79 grenade launchers, and 31 single-bore guns. The cache also included 38 pump-action guns, 4 muzzle-loaded rifles, and a number of locally made pistols and rifles.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh apologised to the people of the state for the ethnic violence that has been occurring since May 2023, and appealed to all sections to "forgive and forget" the past.
"This entire year has been very unfortunate. I want to say sorry to the people of the state for what's been happening today, since last May 3. Many people lost loved ones. Many people left their homes. I feel regret. I apologise. But now, I hope, after seeing the last three to four months progress towards peace, normalcy will be restored in the state in 2025," Biren Singh said.
