Beyond Marks: Are We Educating Children or Outsourcing Education to Parents?

Yesterday, I attended the Parent-Teacher Meeting (PTM) at my son's school. Like every parent present, I walked into the auditorium with one simple hope, to understand how I could help my child become a better student and a better human being.

The principal addressed the gathering first. He spoke passionately about the school's commitment to academic excellence and the role parents play in a child's success. Then came the subject teachers. Since the school follows the ICSE curriculum, there are 13 subjects in the 4th standard. Each teacher requested that parents spend "just 15 minutes" every day helping their child with that particular subject.

Individually, the request sounded reasonable.

Collectively, it revealed a deeper problem.

Thirteen subjects multiplied by fifteen minutes equals 195 minutes every day. That is more than three hours of additional academic engagement expected from parents after school.

This raised a question that every school, every parent, and every policymaker should seriously consider.

At what point does parental involvement become the outsourcing of education?

The Reality of Today's Families

We no longer live in a world where one parent is always available at home.

In countless families, both parents work, not to accumulate wealth but simply to meet rising living costs. Quality education has become increasingly expensive. School fees continue to rise. Tuition classes have become almost a parallel education system. Music, sports, coding, art, dance, and other extracurricular activities all come with additional costs.

Parents leave home early, return late, and often sacrifice their own comfort so that their children can receive the best possible education.

When schools ask parents to spend another three hours every evening teaching multiple subjects, one has to ask:

Is this expectation realistic?

The Child's Day Has Become a Marathon

Consider the daily schedule of many students.

They spend six to seven hours in school.

They return home with homework.

Many attend tuition classes.

They participate in extracurricular activities because holistic development is encouraged.

Some barely find time to have dinner before beginning the next round of studies.

Now add three more hours of guided study with parents.

Where does childhood fit into this schedule?

Where is the time for reading a story, playing outdoors, talking to grandparents, pursuing a hobby, or simply doing nothing?

Children are not machines designed to maximise productivity every waking hour.

They are growing human beings whose minds and personalities need space to breathe.

Sleep Is Not a Luxury

One aspect that deserves far greater attention is sleep.

Children in primary and middle school generally require around 9 to 11 hours of quality sleep each night for healthy brain development.

Sleep strengthens memory.

It improves concentration.

It regulates emotions.

It supports physical growth.

It enhances creativity and problem-solving.

When children consistently lose sleep to cope with academic pressure, the consequences are significant. Reduced attention, irritability, anxiety, poor memory, lower immunity, and emotional instability are not isolated problems. They directly affect both IQ and EQ, which are equally essential for long-term success.

Ironically, in our attempt to improve academic performance, we may be weakening the very brain that is expected to perform.

What Is the Purpose of Education?

If education is only about examination marks, then perhaps the present system is working.

But if education is meant to create responsible, compassionate, emotionally balanced, socially aware, and confident individuals, then we need to broaden our definition of success.

The world no longer rewards only those who score the highest marks.

It rewards those who can communicate, collaborate, think critically, solve problems, adapt to change, lead with empathy, and continue learning throughout life.

These qualities cannot be developed through endless worksheets alone.

Schools Must Lead, Not Delegate

Let me be absolutely clear.

Teachers work incredibly hard.

Schools play an indispensable role in shaping young minds.

This article is not a criticism of teachers. It is an invitation to rethink an education model that increasingly transfers classroom responsibilities to homes.

If students need additional guided practice, why not build it into the school day?

Would extending school hours by thirty to sixty minutes for supervised revision reduce stress at home?

Could schools introduce structured study periods where teachers clarify doubts before children leave campus?

Could homework become more meaningful and less repetitive?

Could academic reinforcement happen where trained educators are available instead of assuming every parent has the time, subject knowledge, and teaching ability to do so?

These are questions worth discussing.

Parents Must Also Look Within

Parents are not free from responsibility either.

Many of us unknowingly overload our children.

A child attends school all day, then tuition, then music, then sports, then coding, then language classes.

Every activity appears beneficial in isolation.

Together, they create exhaustion.

Children also need family conversations, friendships, festivals, books unrelated to exams, outdoor play, quiet reflection, and unstructured time.

Character grows in these moments.

Emotional resilience grows in these moments.

Creativity grows in these moments.

Mental Health Cannot Be an Afterthought

Across the world, childhood stress and anxiety are increasing.

The number of students experiencing burnout, emotional distress, and severe academic pressure should concern every educator and every parent.

When education becomes a source of fear instead of curiosity, something has gone wrong.

When children worry more about disappointing adults than discovering knowledge, something has gone wrong.

When success is measured only through marks, something has gone wrong.

No report card is more valuable than a healthy mind.

No examination is more important than a child's life.

Education Is a Partnership

Parents and schools should never work against each other.

Nor should one transfer its responsibilities to the other.

Schools provide professional education.

Parents provide love, values, emotional security, and lifelong guidance.

When both respect their distinct roles, children flourish.

When expectations become unreasonable, children carry the burden.

A Question Worth Asking

Every parent wants their child to succeed.

Every teacher wants to see students excel.

Every school dreams of producing toppers.

But perhaps it is time to ask a more important question.

Should the ultimate goal of education be to create the topper of the school, or the best version of a human being?

The answer to that question will determine not only the future of our education system, but also the future of an entire generation.

Before assigning another worksheet, enrolling another tuition class, scheduling another activity, or demanding another hour of study, let us pause and ask ourselves:

Are we preparing our children for examinations, or are we preparing them for life?

The answer may change the way we educate forever.
