The Silent Epidemic: Confronting the Hypocrisy on Early Pregnancy in Southern Nigeria

It is time to stop pretending. While many voices in Nigeria never hesitate to condemn early marriage in the North, those same voices remain deafeningly silent about the rampant crisis of child pregnancy in the South. The truth is undeniable; young girls in this part of Nigeria are getting pregnant at an alarming rate, not within the bounds of marriage, but through reckless, irresponsible relationships that leave them abandoned, vulnerable, and trapped in cycles of poverty.

This is not just an unfortunate trend; it is a social disaster. These girls are not wives; they are victims of exploitation, left to bear the burden of single motherhood while the men who impregnate them walk away without consequences. We have seen how Baby Factories flourish in many southern states. Where is the outrage? Where are the so-called activists who claim to care about the future of young girls?

The hypocrisy is glaring. The same people who shout about early marriage in the North fail to acknowledge that while those marriages, whether we approve or not, often come with familial support and some level of structure, the teenage pregnancies in the South frequently lead to shattered lives, abandoned children, and an ever-growing cycle of juvenile delinquency.

Let’s be clear: No child should be forced into adulthood, whether through marriage or pregnancy. But it is time for Southern Nigeria to take a hard look in the mirror. The real battle is not just about condemning what happens elsewhere but addressing the rot in our own backyard. If we truly care about the future of our girls, we must tackle this crisis with the same energy and urgency. Anything less is hypocrisy.
