So who butchered the quote?

Claire Castro said “ibang mga guro”.

She was clearly referring to “some teachers”.

Yet, media reports turned it into “mga guro,” which makes it sound like she condemned ALL teachers.

So, who is accountable for the omission of “ibang”?

Was it the reporter? Editor? Copy desk?

Whoever approved the altered quotation owes teachers and Castro a correction.

Journalism 101: quotation marks are for what someone actually said, okay?

I’m all for reminding both prosecution and defense counsels of the standards of conduct expected in an impeachment trial. But the presiding officer, Senator Chiz Escudero, should also have the courage to draw it around everyone -- including his fellow Senator-Judges and most especially the respondent herself, the Vice President.

VP Sara Duterte has repeatedly refused to appear before the Impeachment Court, while publicly accusing the proceedings of “bending the law.” It is not just a comment on the prosecution, that is fair game as in any trial. The open remark actually casts doubt on the legitimacy of the Impeachment Court itself which is the very constitutional body now sitting in judgment of her.

If counsels can cross the line, surely the respondent can too. At what point does publicly portraying a constitutionally mandated proceeding as one that “bends the law” cease to be political rhetoric and become contempt for the Court and the entire trial? Senator Escudero won't hopefully play favorites on this issue.

The standards cannot be exacting among the frontliner counsels and suddenly permissive when the attacks come from the high public official actually on trial. The rules, and the rebuke, must apply just as forcefully to the VP. After all, contempt for these proceedings is ultimately contempt for the constitutional process itself, and, in many ways, for the Filipino people in whose name this trial is being conducted.

Presiding Officer @SayChiz, if you are willing to reprimand the Prosecution for a non-specific post, then the Filipino people expect the same standard to apply to the Senator-Judges.

Not just Pia Cayetano.

Call out Alan Cayetano, Robin Padilla, and Imee Marcos as well when they cross the line. Rules on impartiality, decorum, and responsible conduct cannot apply selectively depending on who is being criticized.

If the standard is accountability, then apply it to everyone. No exceptions. No selective reprimands.
